So trip to Duluth did not go exactly as planned, but was a lot of fun and I now have a wonderful story to tell. So we set out from Waldsee on what should be a 3 hour (tour) car ride to Duluth at around 2 pm in Thorsten's Dark Purple Dodge Neon. We being Me, Thorsten, Carsten, and Christian. It's a beautiful day, but a little hot. We're on the road about a half hour when Carsten realizes that we are heading West, not East. We turn around everything is good, the engine is a little hot but we alternate AC and Air and the car seems to be able to handle it. When we are about an hour away from our destination the engine is way to hot even though the windows are down and the heat is on, we decide to pull over in the shade for a while, open the hood and let the car cool down. We realize that this is taking a while and since the only shade we were able to find was in someone's driveway we ask the people for some help. Thorsten has no coolant left and the people give us cold water to drink and warm water to use as coolant. The car cools down and we set out, but decide to stop at the next gas station to buy coolant should the need arise again. As we are about to turn left the car makes a weird sound and dies. We get out and push it across the highway to the Spur gas station and try to figure out why the car won't start. We get 3 teenagers that work in the gas station to look at the car, Thorsten is out of oil but even after we add oil the car won't start. One of the Teenagers calls his dad to come to the gas station to look at the car. The man as it turns out fixes cars and sells them The man comes and says that it will take at least 800 dollars to fix. Thorsten then asks "How much would you pay me for this car?" They settle on 600 dollars. In the mean time Carsten has called his parents, who are at the cabin where we will be spending the night, to come pick us up. We get the man's address and cell phone number and move Thorsten's car out of the way and Carsten's dad arrives and drives us to the man's house where Thorsten gives the man his keys and gets the check. We get to the cabin around 8:30 and have dinner and cake (It was Carsten's mother's birthday) and we just relax. Carsten's sister and her husband are also there. It was so beautiful on the lake. The sky was unbelievable you could see so many stars. We spent some time laying on the dock and looking at the sky. We went to bed around 11:30. This morning we got blueberry pancakes and sausage for breakfast. I had a real shower (i.e. no spiders, no puddle of dirty water outside the shower, water pressure, etc.) and we finally drive out to Duluth in the Red Truck that Carsten was going to be taking the following week anyway. We spent some time at Canal park, watched the bridge go up and down, ate cheese curds and had malts before setting out for Bemidji. On the ride back Thorsten gave the finger and said fuck you to every Spur gas station we passed. As we are driving "Sweet Home Alabama" come on the radio. We're all singing along and I realize how perfect my life is right now. It's not what we expected, but we had a great time. Two weeks left, and then I'm back in Beloit.
