Claire’s not sure how much time has passed when she finally steps out of the cabin, still feeling dazed. The sun is shining through the canopy of trees as she stumbles across the jungle. She pauses and whips around, not entirely surprised to see no traces of the cabin she’d shared with her father. And the voices. And Jacob. Slowly she turns back around and begins walking.
She doesn’t know where she’s going and she doesn’t particularly care. She cannot change what has happened. She cannot change what will happen.
She places one foot in front of the other.
She hears the voice of John Locke calling out her name. She hesitates for a brief moment, her eyes scanning and landing on her former trusted friend making camp with the Others. Then she continues on her way.
As the sun begins to set she can hear her name on the wind. She can also hear a baby’s cry. She continues walking.
As darkness descends she finds herself looking at the smoldering remains of the Others compound. Amongst the rubble, Ben’s damaged house is the only one that still stands.
Claire closes her eyes and inhales. She can see herself dying in the destruction of the house that she’d made her home. But she did not die.
She opens her eyes and she knows. This is where she belongs. With the ruins. With the dead.
