Screencaps here on dw or here on eljay.

An Anomaly opens in a theatre. A woman steps out, looking carefully around. Behind her, a man helps another woman. They pick their way through the theatre. The man searches for a way out; the second woman is very sick.

The sick woman, Charlotte, dies in the arms of Emily after charging her to look after 'him'. The man, Ethan, turns on Emily and lays the blame on her.

A Creature emerges from the Anomaly.

Credits.

In the garden, Gideon tells Matt he has only months left. Matt is upset, but Gideon tells him he can do it alone. Matt's not so sure; he has no real suspects yet.

Matt asks Gideon if it was worth it.

"Was it worth it? Your whole life, just...waiting."

"Of course. Think what's at stake."

Jess picks up an Anomaly Alert. Becker passes out Black Boxes - he calls Connor Temple, for some reason - and they head out. Philip catches Connor on the way and demands his help with a computer program. Connor reluctantly agrees.

Matt's phone rings and he answers to Jess. He heads off for the Alert.

Philip has designed a bio scan that will pick up escaped Creatures in the ARC. He needs Connor to check for incompatibilities in the code. Connor attempts to get out of it but Philip talks him into it. He gets a sympathetic look from Jess.

"Great. I'm an overpaid button pusher. In fact, forget the overpaid part."

The team arrive at the theatre. Emily urges Ethan to go back through the Anomaly, but he doesn't want to. He sounds vaguely Irish to me, but maybe that's just because I know he's from Dublin...

"It's what Charlotte would want. She understood our rules."

"She died because of you and your rules."

Matt hasn't found anything. Jess gets curious while he's searching around.

"Matt, can I ask you a question? Why did it take you so long to pick up your phone?"

"I was busy. Personal stuff."

"Are you ok?"

"Yeah. I'm fine."

Emily watches him find the Anomaly. She throws some props at him to distract him and jumps through the Anomaly. Matt follows.

In the ARC, Jess and Connor quietly panic. Well, not so quietly on Jess' part, but still.

Matt finds himself in a landscape not unlike the one he dreams about, except this one has trees. He runs off.

Becker and Abby have reached the theatre. They find Matt's Black Box on the floor near the Anomaly. Ethan watches from hiding as Becker assembles the Locker, sealing the Anomaly.

Abby finds Charlotte's body.

Matt chases Emily through the trees, until she takes him out with a branch. Dazed, he half-sees something jumping through the trees. It snatches Emily, who frees herself with her boot knife but falls a long way. Matt takes her back through the Anomaly.

Becker and the others are figuring out where Matt's gone. Becker is gung ho about keeping the Anomaly locked. Connor and Abby talk him into opening it again.

"Becker, mate, it's Connor. You need to open it now. This is Matt we're talking about."

"You know the rules better than anyone. If he's gone through it's on his own head."

"I don't care about the rules. You don't know what it's like, to be trapped out there, to be lost so far away."

"You can't just leave him there."

"You know that."

Matt and Emily are being attacked. The Anomaly opens just in time and Matt drives the Creature off before jumping through. It follows him, but Abby and Becker drive it back through and then lock the Anomaly again.

Becekr and Matt take Emily to the hospital, leaving Abby with the Anomaly.

Connor tries to get out of the ARC, but Philip's keeping him there.

Matt pokes around in Emily's belongings, nearby blinding himself with her smelling salts. He attempts to find out more about her, but she's very close mouthed.

Ethan watches a soldier wander around on stage. The pre-credit Creature gets him. Ethan doesn't care much.

Emily fakes sleep until her guard is far enough away. Then she smashes him over the head with - a vase? Maybe?

On a different ward Abby, Becker and Matt discuss Charlotte, who died of a disease medicine could've helped with and who has smallpox antibodies. Matt thinks they're time travellers.

Dressed, Emily hides just in time to hear Becker announce his plans to arrest her. He also complains about Matt's run through the Anomaly, which put everyone in danger.

Jess contacts them to tell them that the man in the theatre has been attacked. Becker twists that into Matt's fault, too, before storming off. Abby goes after Becker and leaves Matt to deal with Emily, who isn't there anymore.

Connor watches the scan run. Philip is dismissive on his way out.

He spots Rex, hanging around in the office just outside the Menagerie. He contacts Connor to stop the scan, but it's too late; the ARC goes into lockdown. Philip is trapped in the office with Rex, while everyone but Connor and Jess bail out of the Hub. Most of the lights go out, too.

Jess seems very surprised by the lockdown. Does she not know about it?

Becker's lost contact with the ARC.

Matt's still following Emily.

Connor puts his foot in it with Philip. The lockdown's designed so that only Philip, at the moment, can unlock it, but he can't unlock it because he's trapped in the office.

"Philip never mentioned any of this to me. What kind of idiot gives someone a job to do and doesn't even brief them properly?"

"I can still hear you, Connor."

"...brilliant."

...

"You can't over ride the scan without a retinal scan. Which I can't do because I'm stuck in here!"

Abby and Becker are back in the theatre. So is Emily, who's calling out for Ethan. Ethan's just knocked out a soldier. Matt catches Emily, who immediately declares her intention of going with him to hunt the Creature.

"I'm coming with you."

"Or what?"

"I'll be forced to hurt you."

"...again. You'll be forced to hurt me again."

A Creature sneaks up behind Becker, but it's distracted by another Creature calling. Did one come through off screen? I thought there were just the two? Of course the Anomaly was open for ages.

Matt orders Abby and Becker to search inside while he goes outside. He's hiding Emily from them.

Philip is trapped in a room designed to suffocate Creatures. He has twenty minutes, give or take. It's twenty minutes, give or take, until the end of the episode. Ha.

Abby creeps around the theatre.

"Are you ok?"

"Yeah. Depends on how you look at it. First day at a new job and I've practically murdered the boss, but other than that I'm...I'm fine."

Connor goes to "do something quite - quickly. Otherwise, this could look really bad on my CV."

Abby's still roaming in the flies. There are noises and she's almost hit and almost hits.

Matt and Emily run along the street, looking up. They can hear but not see the Creature.

Abby lifts and lowers lights and backdrops until she finds the Creature. She knocks it out of the flies and Becker shoots it.

Connor starts wiring things together. He asks after Rex. Philip is not happy about where Connor's focus is.

Connor begins inane chatter to keep Philip focused while he hacks. Philip comes very close to confessing his nefarious secret, but Connor cuts him off.

"There are some things I haven't told anybody. About a special project called New Dawn. I need you to listen to me very carefully."

"Look, now's not a time for last words. It's not over till the fat lady sings. I mean, I thought fat ladies sung all the time at the opera. Never really got it."

"Shut up and listen."

"Shutting up. Listening."

And then Philip loses consciousness. Jess, that was only five minutes, not twenty.

Matt and Emily see the Creature. Matt can't get a shot; it's out of range. Emily does not grasp this.

"Shoot it."

"I can't, it's out of range."

"But shoot it!"

"You're very bossy, aren't you?"

Matt shoots the flagpole and blasts the Creature in through a window.

Connor can't hack the new system, but his old system is still underneath. He finds the back door he left himself, but he's forgotten the password. And having Jess hanging over his shoulder is probably not helping, either.

Connor tries an incorrect password. He only gets three tries in all. He tries again; still no joy.

Abby Temple finally gets him through. The system magically knows what he wants to do and lifts the lockdown.

Jess, Connor, and some medics they've picked up somewhere burst into the office. Philip starts coming round under an oxygen mask. Connor fashions an oxygen chamber out of a plastic box for Rex, who recovers very rapidly.

Philip watches as Rex soars around the lab.

Matt and his gun lead Emily into the room the Creature crashed into. It's on a conference table on the other side of some glass walls, which means Matt can't fire; the charge won't pass through.

How did the Creature get in there in the first place? There's no broken glass and no open doors as far as I can see.

The Creature solves the conductivity problem by jumping at them. Matt gets a door or a table top or something to hold it off. Emily uses her smelling salts to scare it away. Matt's EMD has been damaged in the fight.

Becker's on his way with backup.

Emily comes up with a plan to use steel rope to tie it down. There's a lot of back and forth and almost hit and struggling, but eventually they get there.

Emily tells him there were fifteen of them last time anyone counted, and they usually stay where there's no people. The Creature breaks free and lunges at them; Matt knocks her out of the way and it goes over the side.

Emily wants to find Ethan and leave in payment for her help. Matt wants to help her, and he talks Abby into covering for them.

"Please? Just cover for us. It's her life, she should be free to go."

"This better be a good idea."

Why do Becker and Abby have to clean up inside the building? The only thing in there is some broken glass.

Connor apologises to Philip for the lockdown. Philip doesn't much care, because now he knows Connor's a genius. This could be useful.

Connor asks about his confession, but Philip brushes it off. Where's Lester? He hasn't been around all episode.

Matt brings Emily to his flat. She's surprised at the lack of manservant. His apartment is very - round.

Emily steps out onto his balcony and looks over the city. Matt joins her and she apologises for hitting him.

"The people I travelled with were all damaged in their own way, being so far from home. But Ethan is something else. He's different. It's as if there's something broken in him. Charlotte kept him under control and now that she's dead none of us are safe."

Ethan in a warehouse near enough to look at Matt's flat. He randomly kills a guy who happens to see him.
