So today Mr. Moonbeam and I were in the HEB, and the Mother's Day cards assaulted me. I got all teary and had to get hold of myself.

Then later I went to put on the horrible pink flowerdy pajamas that Mom and Brooke gave me, and got all depressed.

So we had the memorial service and wake yesterday. The service was actually very nice - I didn't know this pastor very well and really wished the old pastor had been there (he died of prostate cancer a few years ago), but he surprised me by reading Mom's poetry for the better part of the "sermon." A while back I sent my mom a collection of Beethoven's letters and I had remembered that there was one he wrote just after his mother died with a line in it that really summed up my feelings about all this. I just found it, and yes, it is perfect:

My mom died on Saturday at about 5:00. Characteristic of my family no one can agree on the time. I was in the car on the way over there when I got the call and I discovered when I got home that my son had sent me an IM at 5:17 telling me she was gone, but my sister swears up and down it was 5:00 p.m., which is what I wound up writing in my book ( Read more... )

Mom's home! :D

Dad just called and told me Mom's in hospice. They say they hope this will just be for a few days so they can get her pain meds leveled out and then she can go home. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. :(
