Set Fire To The Third Bar (fic!meme fic for itsnotmydestiny)

It’s a stupid business trip. Arthur needs her thanks to a case of laryngitis, she’s the only one he trusts to get his point across to the other directors. Lance knows all this, he was the one who talked her into going…and yet now that she wasn’t here, he hurt for missing her.

It takes him back to a time when he was small, when he wouldn’t let Mum go on a trip because he was frightened of being left alone.

“Mother Earth watches all her children, little soldier. Just wiggle your toes in the dirt, and through her, I’ll know you’re there, and you me.”

So he’s in the middle of the park, shirt and shoes in a neat pile by his side, laying back in the grass with his eyes shut. He’s deliberately trying to invoke magic to feel her, somewhere between here and there. Her heat, her laugh, her soft touches and earnest looks…

Gwen.

Behind shut eyelids, he can see her face and it causes him pain. He’s worse than stupid, he’s lonely and calling on powers he has no business petitioning just for a taste of her across the distance. Just a second where he feels her and nothing else…

There’s a rush of heat, and a whisper of her perfume. Warmth seals his lips shut, silken and familiar. He doesn’t move, relaxes beneath the pressure and breathes deep. Across the distance, a thin cord binds them through the blades of grass and the soil. The ants and earthworms are speaking with her voice, and when he finally opens his eyes to look at the sky, he sees her eyes in the distant blue.

It takes him a while to be able to breathe again, to realize that his cell phone is ringing. His heart’s racing and he can’t get air, but still he answers when he sees Gwen’s name on the caller ID.

“H…hello?”

She’s laughing, as breathless and windswept as he feels when her voice touches his ears.

“If you missed me that much, darling, all you had to do was call.”

Laughing just a little, he relaxes into the grass and stares into her eyes through the clouds in the sky.

“I could have.” He agrees, tucking one arm behind his head. “But I’m worse than stupid when you ain’t here, baby.”

“There’s something worse than stupid?”

Hesitating, he removed his arm from behind his head and stretched a hand towards the sky, aching to feel her skin instead of the cool air and the warm sun.

“Baby? You got no idea.”
