So, I might have mentioned it in passing to some of you, but I'm going to be moving from the apartment I have had for almost 6 years to a new place with a roommate. It'll be in the same building as three of my other friends. I did it partly for a change of pace and partly because I wanted to save money. With shared utilities and more than half the ( Read more... )

Well, his name is Tezos and he is androgynous and handsome with a good fashion sense - essentially David Bowie. His androgyny and purple eyes come from his father, who is in the stratum of his race with ESP abilities, and he himself has empathy skills.

He's a former physician who was disbarred after the death of a patient, which was in actuality foul play on a jealous third party who distrusted his psychic talents. Nevertheless, he feels guilt and suffers nightmares as a result of this, and has agreed to act as the captain of a bunch of rogues in order to get a new life. He still uses his medical talents and his interest in maps as the navigator, and his leadership skills help keep the crew from killing each other.

In combat, he's skilled with pistols and has a dart pistol outfitted with a variety of poisonous darts, and has the Poisons skill to make new toxins to use in battle. Aside from this, he has the most HP of the group despite having the baseline strength and also has some hand-to-hand combat skills in an art similar to aikido. He does take some penalties for things consistent with his character - he can't abandon a crew member in danger, he must help people who need it, and he is endlessly fascinated with alien races, as well as occasionally suffering from the intense nightmares that are a result of his disbarring.

Also he likes chocolate. A lot.

Is that in a free-form game, or are you playing something specific?

It's a GURPS-based game in a sci-fi universe. Kind of Mass Effect/Star Wars/Firefly-influenced in different ways. One of our group wanted Star Wars/Firefly, one wanted Shadowrun, and I wanted techno dragons and space wizardry. We got a combination of these.

Well except for my techno dragons.

I mourn the loss of your techno dragons, but the rest sounds pretty cool. I only recently read any of the GURPS books, but it seems like you could make a pretty complex and interesting character with the rules.

Yeah, it's a lot of fun. I'll admit I was kind of irked that I was told my character was "too weak" by two of my friends but that was because the other two were taking things like claws and cybernetic implants. Screw all y'all, I started out with 15 HP and the ability to concoct poisons. :P

Tell them you're going for a linear warrior, quadratic wizard time of character. heh

Actually, I mentioned I'm going for a Combat Medic. The fact he's skilled in pistols still counts as combat ability. He's just more of a Guile Hero.

I saved you from linking to the trope pages.

Combat medic is always a cool way to go, imo. It's not my cup of tea, but still cool. In tabletops, I'm more of a kung-fu wizard type, while in video games I always go for the tanks.

Yeah, believe it or not, it wasn't my initial intention, but my other friends were going for combat and SOMEONE had to patch those bozos up.

A healer friend of mine and I were talking about this one day. We both agreed that the tendency to pick healers & tanks stems from an overgrown sense of responsibility.

Plus apparently James is thinking of various other medical equipment that can be used in and out of battle. :3

Beware your mighty scalpel and extensive knowledge of anatomy! Maybe you can get a skill synergy for weapons and medicine. I'd have to check out that works in GURPS (or if there's anything like that).

Getting knives as an additional skill later on is not out of this realm of possibility, although I'm using some of the points to go towards his martial arts prowess which I just thought of last night. I figured that would dovetail well since he'll know the right pressure points...

I'm excited about the race I created, too. His father's race has different strata based on the color of the eyes, which each one having different talents and each one styled after a different chakra.

I Googled it, and apparently what I was talking about is based off the Improving Skills from Default (Basic Set p.173) rules. So, you can start your martial arts/knife skills at a higher level because you know medicine/anatomy.

I usually play non-combat mages, and trust me, in GURPS, you can be powerful in MANY ways. Unless you're just playing munchkin style (get dropped into a dungeon and hack & slash your way to the treasure).
