Post-Statuing

Today I was a statue! For the first time! I stood in front of the gates of parliament hill dressed in my generic roman costume, had my photo taken by and with all kinds of entertained folks and made a kid scream (in a good way).

Tips In Light Of My First Day As A Statue:
- use the thinnest fabric possible for your costume, the thicker the fabric, the more impossible it is to work with afterwards, and the more paint you end up using
- how to make your costume stiff and statue-looking? You just paint it! (I found house paint worked really well)
- you do not need to stand on anything to be a good statue, but if you want to, make sure it is really sturdy and actually flat. Not flat really hurts your feet and not sturdy (a la dollarama kid's chair) results in just plain standing on the ground
- It does not matter what position you stand in, it will get uncomfortable. When you get to the point where you can't possibly continue in that position, moving very slowly (gracefully, if you can manage it) makes moving alright!
- winking at people rocks!
- shade is a good plan
- sunscreen is a better one
- having a large, bonging clock behind you is a great way to measure time without moving
- white bodypaint is a bitch. Seriously. It streaks, it is not opaque, it is just generally a bitch. (I found metallic worked really well when i did my robot costume a few years back)
- use face/body paint for your face, but dollar store acrylic paint works really really well for arms, chest, back, etc.
- bring lots of water, snacks and a shirt with you
- don't be afraid to break character, sometimes the reactions are SO worth it
- A hat for change is a MUST
- People are fantastic. They really really are.

Cheers all!
