(no subject)
danny proposed to me today. i said yes.
.... we're engaged!
he took me on a horseback ride through the pt. reyes mountains and surprised me during a picnic lunch in a meadow. he got down on one knee and everything - very formal. i didn't see it coming, at all. he totally surprised me. but once he asked, there was no answer but yes in my mind.
danny and i have lived together for approx. 7 years. you learn a lot about a person in that amount of time. he and i have been partners in many senses of the word, especially since we moved up north. we certainly don't have a "typical" relationship -- it didn't start with dating and there certainly wasn't a big, romantic, falling-in-love stage. we've just developed, as people, and friends, together... and now there will be so many more dimensions to that growth. depth is good.
tera and isaac's wedding was the first time danny and i interacted, surrounded by friends and friends' family, when romance was an actual part of the interaction. maybe it was the wedding fever that goes around, or just the general excellence of the trip... maybe it was not working, for once... or maybe it was just time. whatever it was, the trip was insanely romantic. and it was new, and scary, to feel romance and be surrounded by people who were not expecting that romance. after all, danny and i have been friends for so long, romance probably didn't seem likely. but life is full of surprises, and he and i talked about it at length. there was no sense in ignoring what felt like a natural evolution.
it feels strange to be engaged, mostly because it's such an official thing to be. i've never needed to get married to be happy; i've never been opposed to marriage either. but it was never a part of my life plan.
when i was younger, if i imagined getting engaged, i didn't imagine it this way.
but i wouldn't have it any other way.
