a few months ago, we got a new litter box for lara. i'd seen a new system featured somewhere on the internet and was intrigued; instead of clay-based litter that clumps around the waste, this litter box had clay pellets layered over an absorbant mat (with slotted plastic in between). the feces stay on top of the pellets, and the urine filters through the pellets and is absorbed by the pad below. according to the internet, not only did this make cleaning the litter box faster and more sanitary, it also reduced odors. all these things excited me. but does the system work?
yes. it works. it really really really works. instead of breaking apart stinky clumps of clay-soaked urine, i simply slide a tray out, deposit any solid waste onto the absorbant mat, fold it up and pop it in the trash. the mats have odor control built in, and they hold a lot of liquid. also, the pellets really don't stick, so you don't have to buy pounds and pounds of kitty litter.
i normally don't promote big corporate items, but i can't say enough good things about this cat litter system. there are a few different kinds out there, but
i use the Tidy Cats "Breeze" one, mainly because they sell it at Petco and it was cheaper than the one they sell at Target.
i can see this system working out especially well if you have multiple cats. less smell = less stress, or so i've been told by vets. (and lara, who is very picky about switching litter types, had no trouble transitioning -- we left her old litter box next to the new one, and she switched over to the pellet/pad system when the old litter was too clumped and gross to use anymore.)
