Question about severe heartburn... 25 weeks 5 days

Dec 31, 2010 02:00

So two days ago I started developing heartburn that was much worse than any heartburn I had during this pregnancy. Most the heartburn I'd suffered was mild and came and went. This heartburn made my back ache, and was more severe than any I'd experienced in the past. I kind of brushed it off, figuring this was probably due to my stomach being so squished by baby at this point.

This morning however I had excruciating chest pains with my heartburn. The pain was so severe I was balled up in tears, the pain was going all the way into my teeth. I had never experienced any kind of chest pain like that before, it felt like heartburn just...wow so severe and scary. I didn't think heartburn COULD hurt so bad! I called docs office as soon as I was able to hold of conversation (seriously all I could do for a while is grunt/gasp/and clench my chest) and after some waiting spoke to the midwife on call. She was concerned about the severity of my pain and told me to try tums, if that didn't work move up to 150 mgs of zantac, but if those two things didn't help to get my butt into urgent care to get checked for gallstones or possibly a hernia in the stomach of some sort. Due to transportation and not having either of those in my house it took a while to do this and I had a few braxton hicks that kind of worried me. But in the end the zantac is what finally got it under control. So no trip to urgent care for me. I still have some back of the throat burning sensation and acid taste but NOTHING like the pain I was in.

What I'd like to know is for those who ended up having to take zantac for their last trimester, did it keep the severe heartburn at bay? Or did you end up having to resort to something else? For now I have 7 pills left (I'm broke) and plan to buy some more when I get paid, but I would like to ask my OB to prescribe it to me to cut me a break financially, is this even possible? Before 150 mgs was not available OTC but now it is so I'm wondering if I'm doomed to be spending an extra 25 bucks a month on these pills until my daughter is born.( ETA: after some suggestions I realized CVS was ripping me off, I can get them well within my range from wally world) I really can't afford to change my diet at all. I'm eating what I have the money for, and I don't have much money at all but I've finally managed my groceries into something I can afford every month. I'm hoping that this will just be something I can fix with a pill everyday and doesn't turn into anything more serious. I am a bit worried though that even with zantac I'm still tasting acid.

Would the taste be worth something bringing up to my doctor before my next appointment? I have my checkup on the 7th, I figure that as long as the pills are working it's not worth freaking out about, I had enough scary already. I've also noticed that after I eat, it only takes about 20 minutes before I'm starving again now. Literally my stomach will growl, I can't seem to stay feeling full long enough for anything! I don't know if this is related to the heartburn or zantac??

Please tell me your experiences, what became of your situation.
