Keep in mind that of all things that I buy into belief wise, this is the one where I haven't completely pinned down the source. There have been studies that contradict the theory though, but from the fundamental explanation I have read over the years is that avoiding tree nuts period during pregnancy and breastfeeding, followed by not introducing them into a child's diet until the age of three is a good idea if the family has a history of allergies.

The strong history of allergies is the thing that defines this. Allergies being defined as all encompassing history, food allergy, skin allergy, seasonal allergy, asthma, um... I'm missing something I'm sure. The point being is that for me, my family has an occasional allergy here and there, but it's not a strong history. My husband on the other hand suffers from skin allergies, asthma, food allergies, and medicine type allergies, and pet! I knew I forgot one. Anyway, he and his family is a walking miracle of not croaking over from the allergies.

Anyway, what I have heard is that for my children, by abstaining from the tree nuts through pregnancy, through breastfeeding and then not exposing them to the children's diet until the age of three, it dramatically reduces the risk of the child developing any of those allergies... and if they do still have some sort of allergy, the postponement of the tree nuts reduces the severity of the allergy.

That being said, the only consistant thing I've seen in the studies stating it makes no difference in avoiding is that there is still the recommendation to abstain if there is a strong family history of allergies.
