I had to take Metformin to help control my PCOS and insulin resistance. It helped me get pregnant, and I stayed on it my entire pregnancy. The side effects can definitely be pretty tough, but if you take fiber I've heard it should help. Once it was in my system for a bit, it didn't affect me near as bad as the beginning. In fact, I think it helped ward off the constipation most pregnant woman seem to get from their prenatals. Nothing awful happened to my baby, and he's now a healthy 10 1/2 month old! :)

Took it through two pregnancies, had two healthy babies. There's a good study from 2007 by Charles Glueck in the journal Fertility and Sterility about the safety of Metformin during pregnancy.

Cool, thanks ... I reckon I can put up the the side effects as long as it is safe for bubs ... because if I have to go onto insulin, I have to change hospitals AGAIN (already changed once) and I DON'T LIKE the other hospital. Grrr.

Thanks for sharing :)

I wonder if that's why there are a fair few GD Mums who end up being induced? (I haven't seen the stats on it, but when talking about it on the forums there seem to be heaps of them)

I take it for PCOS and during my first pregnancy I was told to quit because it might be unsafe for pregnancy. That was 6 years ago and now they're saying it's okay for pregnancy and may actually help prevent complications like GD. I am TTC and plan to stay on it during pregnancy. Yes, the GI side effects are absolute hell, but they do get better and I'd say they probably wouldn't be as bad during pregnancy if you're the type that gets stopped up. The GI side effects actually kept me off of it for a long time, but I'm glad I've finally got back on it.

Although I think it's okay, how bad is you GD? I would think they'd just start with dietary changes. Safe fetus says that it doesn't work very well to control blood sugar in diabetic patients.

My GD seems to be getting worse despite dietary changes, and my size has gone up rapidly too so they are sending me to specialist care earlier rather than later (good chance bubs is getting too big)

Ah, okay, that's good that you are. You need to be careful not to get swept up in the fear of a 'BIG BABY', but it's good to take extra care and get the help you need. Are you seeing a dietician?

An edit to my earlier post.. Safe fetus says it doesn't work well to control blood sugar in patients with gestational diabetes (so works just for regular diabetes, according to safe fetus)..

sometimes they try to use met before switching to insulin shots for GD, but many times it does fail to work properly with GD that is uncontrolled and insulin is used. To the OP - how often are you testing/what method have you done any other life style changes?
