GD - what have you heard about Metformin being unsafe?

I have GD, and chances are I'll probably have to go on some medication soon. Metformin seems to be the weapon of choice here in Australia, and on the maternity forums there are a LOT of women who are refusing to take it. Firstly, the side effects are meant to be pretty nasty (gastro stuff) and secondly some say that it might not be safe for bubs.
Has anyone got any useful information about Metformin and/or any experience with it?
