For those of you who have dopplers at home..This may be a stupid question, but how do you know it is your baby's heart beat and not yours? I have never used or seen one before, but am thinking about getting one!

I don't have a doppler at home, but baby's heartbeat is much higher than yours. Yours should be below 100. Baby's will be around 120-170.

the baby's hb is way faster than your own and is obviously heard a lot lower. I have a cheapo doppler (more like a glorified mic) and we can't hear my heartbeat with it but we can hear the baby's.

What they said. Also, practice learning what your own resting heart rate is. I measure at my carotid artery when I am sitting still and count beats for 15 second and multiply by 4. baby's has been running around 135-140, so his is quite a bit faster.

My boss also just told me the other day that he used to put his ear to his wife's belly and could hear their baby's heartbeat without any special equipment. We tried this, but no luck, just lots of other weird noises.

What everyone else said, plus you can always take your pulse at the same time to make sure it's different from what you're picking up on the doppler. Of course, you'd need an extra hand!
