Wills

So I keep reading everywhere that it's really important to have a will once the baby is born. I'm sort of confused on that, because aside from a pretty decent book collection and an ancient computer, I don't really own anything of value. I have no insurance policies or anything (tho' I probably should look into that now, right?). I own no property, I don't even have a car. (The boyfriend has a car, but it's not even halfway paid off so I don't think it would be much use if we died. The finance company would just take it.) If I don't have anything of value to be passed on, what do I need a will for?

The only other thing I can think of to put in a will is who I would want to take care of my son, but honestly I have no idea who I should choose! My boyfriend wants his two best friends (married couple) to be responsible for the kiddo if anything happens to us, and while I don't NOT want them to, I'm sort of ambivalent about them and I think I should be really passionate about this choice. I have two sisters, but whereas I love them, I don't think they would raise my child the way I want him to be raised. (I'm the only lefty in a family of semi-religious conservatives.) Same goes with my mom. My boyfriend's parents are really really old. And I barely know his brother, and boyfriend and he aren't really close.

Also, if I do decide on guardians, do I have to have an entire will drawn up just for that, or can that be something separate? I know that a will is really important for some reason, but I just can't justify spending more on a will than my child would inherit if it were carried out. :P
