i've been reading two books by George Lakoff recently: Don't Think Of An Elephant! and Where Mathematics comes from. He's very into metaphor - his main idea of the world seems to be that people understand the world through frameworks and metaphors and if something doesn't make sense in your framework (even if it is 'true') you discount it.
