The one problem I consistently faced with Ubuntu/Kubuntu is with the nvidia drivers.

On every upgrade I seem to be getting the problem on my system. Proper driver is never loaded in the configuration file.

A neat hack which worked for me in Ubuntu...

Recently when I upgraded to KDE 3.5.5 on Kubuntu I reset my settings...
A bit of googling gave me the hack to get the smooth fonts back.

Add the following to your ~/.fonts.conf. Neat !
