PROMPT: Contempt vs. Adoration
"To observe people in conflict is a necessary part of a child's education. It helps him to understand and accept his own occasional hostilities and to realize that differing opinions need not imply an absence of love." -Milton R. Sapirstein

TITLE: The Chair

WARNING(S): none
Harry knows that it’s unreasonable for him to hate an inanimate object so much. Pansy inherited her great-grandmothers antique wooden rocking chair recently. Pansy had always spoken fondly of her great-grandmother so it was no surprise to Harry when she was ecstatic about receiving the chair.
The first time Harry actually saw the chair, a weird unreasonable dislike for that large rocking chair washed over him.
The longer the chair was in their home the more he began to despise it. He couldn’t say anything to Pansy about it because she adored her great-grandmothers chair.
He felt like he was stuck between a rock and a hard place. Harry couldn’t stand that chair but Pansy was so in love with it. She invited her friends over for a dinner party just to celebrate inheriting the antique. Her cousin Amelia, the cousin that Pansy secretly hated that was living in France was also hoping to inherit the chair. Pansy took too much joy in writing Amelia to rub salt in the wound.
On afternoon when Pansy was out, Harry saw the chair rocking all on its own. He told Pansy but of course she had to take the chair’s side. She said it must have been the wind.
Harry knew better. That chair was evil.
“I can’t take in anymore Pans! I hate that chair.” Harry felt like a weight had been lifted. “I know you love that chair but I think it’s cursed or something.”
Pansy was quiet for a moment. “That’s a possibility.” Pansy wasn’t as fond of the chair as she led everyone else to believe. Pansy was just happy to make her cousin Amelia miserable.
“I’ll just give the chair to my mother. If you hated it so much Harry you should have said something sooner.”

Perhaps his decision was born from the inherent desire to help her, but he preferred that it was merely a gesture of his affection. Maybe, his possessive jealousy was all the motivation he really needed.
When he started seeing her a year ago, it was just one of those things. He found an euphoric pleasure in the rapture of her body and then without any romantic entanglements, he could drop a few galleons on her bureau and be on his way without any guilt or responsibility.
Then she had started talking to him, letting him learn the splendor of her red mouth and his heart became lost. When his hands had scored the length of her pliant skin, he was paying homage to his affection for her. When he had plundered her mouth, he was expressing the extent of his feverish adoration of all he held in his hands. He worshiped her with trinkets and lovely words; with lavish valentines and five-star take-away. He soon learned that he wanted her for his own, to spend every day in the luxury of her company.
However, when he told her he had come to save her from the disgrace of her profession, and to bind her life with his, she had not responded favorably.
Her kaleidoscope eyes narrowed into menacing slits and her plump red mouth curled into a disgusted sneer as she jerked herself from his embrace. She chastised him for his assumption that she was forced into her harlotry. She ridiculed him for thinking she needed a savior from the heavens and with an outstretched arm, she directed him out of her door; out of her life.
With a ring-box heavy against his heart, he Disapparated. Never giving himself a chance to witness the dawning of her regret.

“Tell me you love it.”
Harry chuckled, raising an eyebrow. “I love it, Parkinson. Of course I love it.” He returned the report, their fingers touching slightly in the exchange. “You knew I would. No one in the department devises better undercover schemes than you.”
“It’s because I used to be a bad girl,” Pansy said with a wink.
Draco felt ill. He coughed loudly, refusing to be subtle about his contempt for these two fools.
He and Pansy used to be a team. Together they had enjoyed insulting Potter and the rest of the goody-goody tossers behind their backs. It had made the day-to-day monotony of being an Auror less boring. Now she had to go and spoil it with all this flirting and googly-eye making. Disgusting! At least he wasn’t the only one sickened by it. He’d seen Granger roll her eyes at their meet-cute behavior and sappy endearments, making snide remarks under her breath.
Pansy glared at him until Potter began to speak, stealing away her attention.
“Malfoy, I know you’ve been working on this case for a while now but if there’s even a possibility that your cover has been blown, you can’t go on this mission. We can’t put Parkinson’s life or yours in danger.”
“What? I know this case better than anyone! Who could possibly replace me?”
“I’ll be going,” Harry stated.
Draco could see the grin on Pansy's face. He stood up. “Fine. Go. But whatever this is, you had better get it out of your system while you’re gone! I can’t take it anymore!”
He stormed off, leaving the stupidly grinning couple in his wake. He went to find Granger. She was smart and she couldn’t stand them either. She would have a strategy to end this Pansy and Potter nonsense!

TITLE: Protocol
AUTHOR:
swimnsailWORD COUNT: 297

WARNING(S): None
In the typical fashion of Pureblood families, Pansy's parents did not love each other. There were no affectionate hugs, kisses, declarations. Instead, there were cold glances, pecks on the cheek, and the occasional hug when needed in public. It was simply Pureblood protocol.
Pansy never questioned this as a child. Every person she had interacted with had acted the same as her parents with their partner. Her playmates never expressed emotional attachment to her, and neither did she. It was simple not done to do otherwise.
Her second year of Hogwarts, she began dating Theodore Nott. Their families were mutual acquaintances, and both their families approved the match. They dated each other for six months, and for that duration, they held hands when required in public, and exchanged chaste kisses in private. She eventually broke up with him after she discovered him kissing Padma Patil enthusiastically behind the Quidditch stands.
She did not date for the rest of her Hogwarts career, despite rumors to the contrary. After the War, she took a job in the Ministry, helping to provide funding for restoring Hogwarts. She saw Harry on most days as he worked in the Auror department. Every time she would see him, she would nod at him cordially and greet him.
This happened for five months. On the fifth month, Harry changed their usual meeting.
“Pansy, do you have any plans tonight?”
“No.” She answered, looking confused, wondering why he had strayed from their usual path.
“Want to do something with me?” He grinned quickly at her.
She considered the offer. “Ok.” She gave him a small smile.
“Great!” He smiled enthusiastically, and quickly kissed her on the cheek and walked away humming to himself.
She raised a hand to her cheek, and stared after him musingly.

“I simply don’t understand why, why they’re all enamoured by him, fawning over him like that!” Draco threw his hands up, piqued.
Mentally, Pansy rolled her eyes. Draco was in on of his moods again. It always seemed to happen when they went out with-
“He’s just famous for killing a wizard, but in actuality, he’s a bloody bugger who just got lucky. Stupid cows,” he muttered, along with several other derogative terms.
“I do hope you don’t have me in mind when you speak those awful words,” Pansy spoke lightly, though there was ice behind those words.
“Of course not!” Draco looked sulkily at her. “You don’t have to look as if you’re going to hex my bits off!”
“Oh, Harry Potter!” a girl said, though it sounded more like a pig squealing. “Can I have your autograph? Please?”
Alright, it was getting irritating, Pansy conceded. She frowned, wringing the serviette on her lap viciously. She watched the dark-haired man acquiescence to the request, and then another, and another. It was always like that on their dates. She wondered how long more she could stand it.
“Stop glowering, Draco,” she told him primly, resisting the flicker of displeasure from running across her face.
“I’m not-”
“Sorry to keep the two of you waiting!” a warm voice interrupted. The owner of the voice walked over to Draco, leaning down to give him a long kiss.
Her own husband did likewise, murmuring against her lips, “Sorry, Pans, I promise I’ll make it up to you.”
Pansy’s earlier annoyances with Harry immediately disappeared. And though she couldn’t see Draco’s face from behind the bushy brown hair, she knew that all traces of his earlier resentment had been definitely wiped off.

"Come on Harry, please," Pansy whined.
"Don't call me that," Harry stated simply. "You don't know me."
"I know what you look like naked," Pansy giggled, and Harry turned around with a start. "What? I have."
Harry sighed. "That's irrelevent, and it was a mistake. Will you please just leave me alone?"
"No," Pansy said fiercly. "This isn't over between us."
"Nothing ever started," Harry scoffed. "We did it once, when Malfoy got me drunk! It hardly counts."
Pansy shrugged. "I like you."
"I hate you," Harry spat back. "I always have done."
"You don't mean that," said Pansy softly.
"Ha!" Harry laughed. "You're deluded, Parkinson." He knew there was something up with her, even if she wasn't exactly insane. The incident in question had happened weeks ago, yet she still followed him around as though they were in a relationship. It was utterly maddening, and he was in half a mind to tell someone about her behaviour, so she could get help. However, then he'd have to admit exactly why she was following him around, and he didn't fancy people knowing they'd slept together.
Pansy shook her head. "No, I'm not. I know you love me, just as I love you."
"Pansy?"
Harry turned around; behind him was Malfoy with a concerned look on his face.
"Come on, Pans. Let's get you back to bed, love," Malfoy said in the softest voice Harry had ever heard him use.
"What's going --?"
Malfoy glared at him, but his voice was quiet as he spoke. "Leave it, Potter, and don't you dare mention this to anyone."
And so Harry did, watching silently as Malfoy took Pansy away with care.
