Yesterday I went to my first football game with my ading Ray. He made a really neat Gators mask out of a Jason mask; he spray painted it in orange and blue with the Chinese symbol for Gators.
The game was about what I expected: crowded, loud and louder. It was supposed to be a sure win for the Gators, but the Dorers (I’m still not sure what their mascot refers to) proved to be a worthy opponent.
It went into double overtime. It was ridiculous. We gave up a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter. That’s not supposed to happen. I couldn’t believe it when I saw a successful on-side kick. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that in person. We ended up winning 49-42.
Throughout the game, I watched, but I think I watched the crowd as much as I watched the game. I was constantly looking back and to the sides for audience reactions. It’s almost always better to show their facial expressions when they’re screaming “EHHH” to the opposing team. People were stomping on the bleachers and screaming like hell. Sandy Le was laughing at me much of the time because I was always looking around and missing the big plays. Since I was too far away to actually take pictures of the game, the only thing I could shoot was the audience’s reactions.
One of the more interesting things I saw was how to gesture “bull shit.” You make the head of a bull by making the devil hand sign on one hand and on the other end you make a fist and then spread out your fingers. I thought it was clever.
A lot of it reminded me of high school pep rallys, which I never liked. But I guess it was a nice college experience. I’d like to go to a basketball game though. It’s a sport I actually enjoy watching. No offense to football, but I think it just has to many stops. It’s stop. Go. Stop. Go. I might go again if I got to shoot on the field for the Alligator or something.
