Things you take for granted...

I've noticed over the last few months that there are all these gaps in my "education", things that are just sort of public domain, general knowledge, that I've managed to totally avoid all personal knowledge of in my life until now... it's good to be filling these gaps, but I'll be interested to see how extensive these gaps are as I continue to come across them...
Some examples of this are:
- Corned beef is actually corned beef, that you buy that way, not "normal" beef that you somehow "corn" (well I guess it actually starts life as normal beef, but everybody just buys it already corned, you don't do that yourself)
- White sauce is actually made of very common ingredients found in just about every kitchen (even including mine)
- Fitted sheets are almost impossible to fold, there is a way to do it, but no matter how you do it the sheet will never be as flat and folded as a regular sheet... and while I'm on the subject of sheets, you don't actually iron them! (learning that sure saved me a lot of time...)
- You can freeze sausages!

I've also learned (mainly through trial and error), that you don't stir flavoured junket with a wooden spoon, you don't leave curry sauce sitting on ANYTHING, if you pour boiling oil into a plastic container the container will melt, and if you cook rice right the first time, it reheats very well. Also, using the washing machine is a lot more effective when you remember to put the washing liquid/powder in the machine...

All in all I guess I'm becoming quite domesticated... my kitchen is currently muffin city, I think I need to take some to work (well you can't really just cook half a batch of muffins) Now I just need to bake some bread and I'll be able to take home-made corned beef sandwiches to work for the rest of the week... they'll wonder what's going on! (which is just how I like it :-)
