I think the worst part of this to me is that there's a good idea buried in here. You know how Mythbusters showed that with a team of ten people, it'll take you about seven hours to find a needle in a haystack? I feel like there's a needle here to be found but this fic misses it.

The idea of the books falling into the hands of the characters could be made to work. If one character has a real reason to believe they're telling the truth, that the books are legit, and they have to convince the others of what's coming? That makes for a really good character drama and study, particularly as time passes and things match up to what's in the books, giving the character who has the books incentive to take action, to keep people from dying who otherwise would. Make the character who gets and believes in the books Harry and we could have a slow conversion of Hermione and Ron over to what the books say, have incredibly interesting scenes with Dumbledore and Harry talking about the future, whether some things can or can't be avoided, and whether it's possible to make it worse by trying to change things rather than better.

But all of that would require characters read the books and take action instead of MST3King the books as one person reads them aloud. And for people being given insight into Harry's life, none of them ever seen to react appropriately. If someone were to narrate to you the life of a friend of yours - all the details and unpleasantness of an entire year - would you be sitting there quipping about it while they're in the room, or would you be sitting there thinking, gaining new perspectives on them as a person?

These characters are acting like Abridged Series characters minus the actual humor, this idea has been lost in its' haystack and I am facepalming forever.

That's what I've always thought about RTB, but the problem is those who do RTB honestly think MSTing the books is amazing. Even after getting their stories pulled from multiple sites they don't get what's wrong with the way they're going about the RTB.
