3324: Mate and School - Samantha Angelina Snape, Melody... others

My mind told me the last day I posted was yesterday. What a liar it is.

Don't forget about the fanfic contest. I don't agree with the tone of the link of the day. It can though be frustrating for some fanfic readers to go looking for a good fanfic only to find that the category they're looking through happens to be be filled with the writer's ( Read more... )

I have to emphatically disagree with the link of the day. Getting judgmental over teenage girls having sexual fantasies. How lovely. Just because he doesn't want to read it doesn't give him the right to call it twisted or suggest slash shippers "see a shrink". Fanfiction is predominantly written by females and people like to write about their ships. That's the way it's always been, and he needs to get over it. Just because those kind of stories aren't to his taste doesn't make them automatically bad, and while I'm sure plenty of it is drivel, there's also plenty of it that isn't. His preferred "action" stories written by men aren't better quality by default, and I've come across plenty of supposedly "masculine" fics that are just as poorly written as any romance Sue story.

I also have to disagree regarding crossovers. I'm very firmly in the camp that believes it is possible to cross over anything with just about anything, although with some fandoms it's easier than others. If a writer is skilled and creative enough, they can get the vast majority of crossovers to work. I for one don't see why he thinks a Buffy/NCIS crossover is all that absurd, and I've actually come across some very unusual but nonetheless well executed crossovers in the past (Harry Potter/Winnie the Pooh and Doctor Who/Hannah Montana come to mind). Judging by the fandoms he lists, it almost seems like he thinks it's only possible to cross space operas with other space operas and nothing else (except NCIS for some reason. Why on Earth does he not consider that weirder than NCIS/Buffy?) I honestly think that shows a lack of imagination that he can't even try to understand why someone thinks it could work. Of course, it's possible for any crossover not to work if it's badly written, including the stuff like BSG/SG1 that he seems to favor. Since he admits to not having seen the new BSG, I'm curious as to what he'd make of the fact I've written a Supernatural/BSG crossover which I honestly think makes perfect sense.

That was quite a rant of my own. Sorry.

All the descriptions of Samantha in this are such a Mary Sue cliche that I want to roll my eyes. Same regarding the portrayals of Draco and Ron. It also looks like a case of completely forced and unexplained Dramione.

I'm going to suggest AU: altered canon. That feels like a concise way of saying it.

I just wish these girls would think about whether they really want to post them to the net where everyone can see them. These action stories typically include Gary Stus that are God Moded and are power fantasies. Or they include harems which amount to another kind of power fantasy.

His logic sounds similar to the logic some people have used saying that only live action should be crossed over with live action, cartoon with cartoon and written word with written word. That's a lack of imagination.
