I couldn't post a Sue last night because fanfiction.net was having problems. I went looking for one this morning instead, and this one had NOT MARY-SUE in the summary line... and we all know what that means.

Disclaimer: JK owns Harry Potter and all associated stuff, not me. (What a pity!) Summary: Harry, Ron and Hermione go back to Hogwarts. A new girl, Sophie, comes into 5th year Gryffindor with them. She claims not to know who her father is, but Harry, Ron and Hermione find themselves knowing who he is. They want to tell her, but her reaction to finding out isn't quite what was expected. Enjoy.(this will be long!)

Harry's summer was uneventful. Well, as uneventful as a teenage wizard's can be. But, other than a small, crazy owl rocketing wildly into his room once a week or so with letters far too big for it, a much more dignified Hedwig coming less often with less large letters, late-night homework sessions and eating his real meals from the stash in his room and not what was put on the dining table at mealtimes (Dudley's diet was forced to continue, much to his dismay), nothing else particularly strange had occurred.
But, despite this, he was glad when he left for Ron's in the last week of the holidays. Hermione arrived the next night. And even more glad when he got onto the Hogwarts Express. The three of them got onto the train, but, as they had been late, there wasn't any compartments left empty. Finally, at the back of the train, they found a compartment with only one person in it. A girl was curled up in a corner, staring out the window, even though she wasn't looking at anyone in particular. "Hi. Can we sit here? Everywhere else is full," Hermione asked. The girl whirled around, she hadn't noticed anyone was around. "Oh, sure," she replied with a smile. She had a distinctly Australian accent, large, round, expressive brown eyes and a thick mass of black hair that hung, slightly wavy, to below her shoulders. "I'm Sophie, Sophie Lattimore. I'm going into fifth year here, but I used to go to a school in Australia." "Really? We're in fifth year, too," Hermione said. "I'm Hermione Granger" "Ron Weasley" said Ron. "Harry Potter" said Harry. She smiled. Just for a split-second, se gave Harry an interested look, "So, what is Hogwarts like?" "Well, it's a big castle, with a big lake in front. And it's always changing a bit, so it's kinda hard to know where you're going, until you know your way around." Harry said. She grinned. This would be just like her mum said.and better! "How come you moved here, from Australia?" Hermione asked. "Well, my mum was born here, she went to Hogwarts. She got married, and I was born. I don't know much about my dad. Mum didn't want to remember. He left when I was about one. I don't remember him. She moved to Australia, and I went to the wizard's school there. But we moved back, mum said Hogwarts was a better school anyway. I just miss my friends a lot," Sophie replied. The food trolley came into their compartment and the conversation broke off. They ended up buying the lot between them.

"We have, apart from the new first years, another new student this year. She is going into fifth year and I'm sure you'll make her welcome. But she must be sorted, along with the new first years." Professor McGonagall announced. "Lattimore, Sophie" she called. Sophie sat on the little stool, the hat over her eyes. "Ah. You're rather brave, but you're also quite smart, no doubt about that, if you tried. Probably not studious enough for Ravenclaw, so I think we'll be best in GRYFFINDOR!" Sophie took the hat off and hurried down to the table. The Gryffindors were clapping. Hermione moved over so she could sit down. Sophie didn't even hear the rest of the sorting. She was thinking about Sally, Tara, Lucy and Kathryn, her friends from the Australian school. She missed them a lot, but at least she knew a few people around.

(Four months later (which just happens to be December - X-MAS holidays - and Harry, Ron, Hermione & Sophie are staying at school))
"How can you just sit there, playing chess? OWL's are coming. Why don't you actually study for once?" Hermione cried to Ron and Sophie one evening. "Well, you see, it's quite simple. Last time I checked, we have months and months 'till O.W.Ls." Sophie said "It's never too early to start studying!" Hermione snapped. She'd been getting more and more irritable lately. Harry thought she'd been studying too much. "Hermione, it's their choice. And it's Christmas Eve! I can't believe you're studying," Harry said. "You're the only one in the whole tower studying," There was only the four of them, Ginny, and a couple of new first-years still at Hogwarts, but, thought Harry, that was beside the point. "Well that, is my choice," replied Hermione testily. "Why is it so cold here?" asked Sophie, changing the subject. "It's not that cold." Harry said "Not that cold? It is snowing! You realize I'd never seen snow until a week ago? Australia doesn't snow, not where I lived, anyway!" she cried, shivering again. "Get used to it." *****
It was Christmas morning. Early. As in, 3am. Harry couldn't sleep, but he wasn't sure why. He got out of bed, got dressed, leaving his presents untouched, and padded softly down to the common room. "You're up early" a voice said from the chair nearest the fire. "Who." "It's just me!" the voice said, laughing. Sophie got up from the chair. "Oh.hey, your accent's gone!" he realized. "I know! Isn't it terrible? I'm becoming English!"' She was joking, of course. "Soon I'll be as mental as all of you, too!" "Yeah," Harry replied "I can't imagine you not complaining about the cold." "It is cold!" "How come you were up so early anyway?" "Oh, never mind" she said quickly. "No, really, why?" Harry urged. "I-I just couldn't sleep, OK?" she snapped. "Oh," Harry said slowly. She was obviously hiding something.

"Maybe she just really, couldn't sleep?" Ron suggested later (11am). Sophie had gone up to her dormitory, leaving the three alone in the common room. "No, really, she looked.guilty, sort of, when I asked her" Harry replied. "Well, I really don't think we should say anything too her, not all of us." Hermione said "We don't know her that well, but she seems nice. And I don't want her to think we're spying on her or anything. She should be able to trust us." "What do you mean?" Ron asked. "Look, she's shy. I want her to sort of open up a bit," Hermione said. "Shy! Come on!" Harry snorted. From what he'd seen the past four months, she was anything but shy. She was talkative and quite loud and let her feelings be known quite openly, but she could keep a secret, if it was important. "She's not shy in that sense. But she's shy in the fact that she doesn't tell you a lot about herself. She talks about anything and everything but that. Think about it. How much do we know about her, that she's told us?" "I guess, she doesn't talk a lot about herself, her own life. But I wouldn't call it shyness. Anything but shyness" Harry replied. "And I reckon she's up in her dormitory so she can catch up on what sleep she didn't get when she was down here doing whatever it was she was doing."
Well, he got that much right.

So, how do you like it? It's my first fic, I think I prefer to read than to write. So please R&R, or I'll keep reading and not do any writing. Sophie's past will come into play a lot more, and eventually you'll find out what she was doing that morning. Yes there will be some Sirius in the next chapters (so I love him. Big deal! Just expect at least a few mentions in all my stories)
Please R&R, I'd really appreciate it. Next chapter will be coming in 1-2 weeks, for anyone who cares. (I'd really appreciate it if at least one person cared!)
