5071: Garden War - Draco Malfoy and Harry Potter

Dec 13, 2020 11:38

I’ve still got the other method of finding covid related stories, but not I am focused on that Lock Down Fest collection over on A03. Of course, I’m not just looking for stories to feature as the Sue of the day. I’m looking for entries to feature for the link of the day. One of the stories I found was Correspondence in the Time of Quarantine by Lediona and Zigster. What stood out for this one was the fact the writer has Harry and Draco getting together after they’ve become single parents. The one weird thing is that their sons are also getting together. I didn’t know it would stand out in another way until I got a good look at the next story on the list.

Title: Garden War
Perpetrator: Cibee (Cibeeeee)
Sue-O-Meter: Awful
Cover/Banner Art: None
Summary: “Harry and Draco are quarantined in their houses, a lake across from one another. What better ways to spend this time than to annoy each other with letters and attempts to prove that their garden is better ?”
Full Name: Draco Malfoy and Harry Potter
Species: Two adults unable to act like adults.
Hair: n/a
Eyes: n/a
Markings: n/a
Poessessions: n/a
Connection to Canon: Harry and Draco are unable to act like civil adults, unlike the story mentioned in the link of the day which actually has Harry and Draco acting like their civil canon selves once they got into adulthood. As I read the letter, I found myself left wondering why these two are communicating with each other and not anybody else with how horrid they are, but then suddenly acting nice to each other doesn’t make much sense. In fact, the fact they’re snogging at the end of quarantine doesn’t make sense at all.
Origin: As noted, this story happens to be part of the Lock Down Fest collection over on A03. What’s really interesting is the fact this story actually features the same theme as the link of the day, which was posted on the seventh of April and then this one showed up on the eight of April, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the writer of this saw the other one and thought, “that looks interesting, the letter idea. I’ll do it too.”
Special Abilities: Driving me nuts with how the story changes from bold to italics which sadly reminds me of The Faery Who Stole the Serpent’s Heart due to the fact the writer decided to make one character’s part of the story in bold. Does the writer really believe the readers aren’t intelligent enough to tell the difference regarding who is writing? I know that might be a bit harsh, but that’s how I feel when writer’s do this kind of thing.

Notes: I’ve got to call the writer of this for not being original in their idea. As I’ve already noted, this was only posted a day after the other one was initially posted. The reason I’m saying they’re original isn’t because they decided to do the same thing another writer did, but that they latched onto the idea and did such a horrible job in comparison to just the first chapter of the other story. I say first chapter of the other story because that is what I’ve looked at, at this point.

Of course, we’ve had a Suethor come here in the past and complain because their story was being compared to other stories which did the exact same thing, but better. They mentioned judging the story on its own merits, but the writer who argued this didn’t understand that actually means “according to one’s skills and one’s good and bad qualities”. It doesn’t mean not comparing it to other works at all particularly when comparing it to other works actually proves something has or does not have those good and bad qualities.

Sample:

Dear Potter,
No, I’m certainly not spending forty days at the Manor. Of course I’m going to quarantine at home.
By the way, I see the new apple tree. Trying to match the one I got, are you? If you look out your window now, I think you’ll see I have three apple trees in my garden.
Have a good plague,
Draco Malfoy

Malfoy, you fucking prat,
I know you wouldn’t stay there voluntarily , but you’ve been visiting your mum and I thought maybe you’ll want to stay with her, arsehole.
Three apple trees, huh? At least you’re one-third caught up with the number of trees I already have in my garden!
And it’s not a plague, stop being so dramatic.
Harry
