So, on top of coming back from a long vacation over the holidays, I’d been wondering where all the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them fics are, only to find out they - for some reason, have their own category despite being of the same canon as the Harry Potter series.
Title:
A Seeing Eye BeastPerpetrator:
PricatSue-O-Meter: Toxic
Cover/Banner Art: The writer’s avatar is some of the writer’s art work. It’s a badly drawn purple minion. (Minions…)
Summary: “Kayley Scalander who is Newt’s niece ends up caring for and having a thunderbird as her seeing eye beast but adventures ensue”
Full Name: Kayley Scalander, Frank
Species: She’s the niece of Newt.
Hair: She has “short brown hair”.
Eyes:
Markings:
Possessions: She has “orange pyjamas”. Of course, there is also her thunderbird Bolt.
Connection to Canon: She’s Newt’s annoying niece. She’s just there for starters, but for some reason Frank feels the need to steal an egg from its nest to give to her pretty much. Well, technically it was Newt he was bringing the egg to, but still. For some reason Newt thinks the unborn thunderbird would be perfect for Kate. (Look. I know Newt is - personality wise - a flake, but he’s not an idiot. Then again, the Suethor thinks this is a good idea.) Apparently, “he knew his niece was into magi zoology like him, plus she had been impressed, hearing her aunt had breeder Fancy hippogriffs,” and “knowing she was ready to have her own beast as a pet plus it would help her, because her parents wanted her to go to Hogwarts yet Kayley felt she was not ready.” No, no and more no here. Newt does not think of his animals as pets. There are so many misses here, and just in the first chapter, which means at least an awful rating on this one. The next chapter is, well, the first line sums it up well. “Yes, as I taught him, to fend for himself, but Bolt is different, because he is your seeing eye beast, plus we have to teach him how to help you.” Scratch the awful rating, the attitude to treating these majestic beasts as mere pets and tools when they should be flying free, which was a major point of the first movie, only for Newt to In go against that whole philosophy gets this a toxic rating. In the third chapter, she gets introduced to other characters from the first movie. Forth chapter, Bolt hatches even though he already had a name, but he’s labeled as a “toddler”. There is a bit about Dementors making Kayley nervous.
Origin: “I felt like writing this, after doing Fantastic Beasts related art stuff in art class, it made me imagine that Newt’s niece had a seeing eye thunderbird, since that is Frank’s species but I still really am in love with him so hope that others fans enjoy, but still writing A Wizard and Frank along with Being With Frank Again.”
Special Abilities: She has a seeing eye companion which should be a seeing eye companion, but she’s somehow Newt’s niece. Apparently Frank can not only sense thunderbird eggs, but carry them in his talons without breaking them despite the fact eggs really should be left in the nest. He’s also able to shift them from his talon to his wing, as “Newt saw the egg in his wings”, but I think that’s a typo. (I don’t want to believe that error was intentional. Please don’t be intentional, and by this I don’t mean in the troll intentional kind of way.) Oh, and Kaylee has a gentle touch. Conveniently, she is also only partially blind. In fact, you can tell she is only partially blind.
Notes: So, I took a gander at the writer’s profile. On top of Pricat’s profile existing since August of 2006, they have over a thousand stories. 1,264 to be exact, but only around a hundred are actually complete. (Unless of course the writer didn’t bother marking their one-shots as complete.)
Also, this is the first fic I’ve looked at which is under the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them category. Can we blame the writer’s choice of giving Kayley a seeing-eye thunderbird on not having seen the Harry Potter series, but treating them as two separate canons, like possibly a good chunk of fandom? Actually, I’d rather think that the reason for having the separate category isn’t because people think that they’re separate canons, but even if they did, I’d think common sense would say no matter what fandom you’re in, a thunderbird would not make a good seeing eye animal.
Sample:
It was midnight in Arizona, as a certain orange feathered thunderbird was flying through the skies but still getting used to being free, and without Newt but was sensing somebody that could use Newt's help, as it was a thunderbird egg which made Frank curious, because he had no clue that there were eggs from his species but needed to show Newt, flying off with the egg in his talons.
Plus it would take a while to get to England, where Newt lived but was hoping that his wizard could help him, flying to England with a lot of strength in his wings so could make it to England in a few days, hoping that the egg was safe and finally made it to England after a few days so was exhausted, plus it was early morning.
He was squawking softly, as not to arouse any Muggles who might be up this time of the morning, seeing that Newt was awake but very surprised, seeing Frank here wondering what was wrong.
"Holy cow, Frank what're you doing here?" Newt asked the Orange feathered thunderbird.
It was a few days later and Frank had made it to England, but Newt saw the egg in his wings, making the male wizard surprised but they both heard footsteps, seeing a young girl with short brown hair, in orange pyjamas making Frank curious.
"Uncle Newt, who's that, is it one of your cool beast friends, from your suitcase?" she asked softly.
"Yes he is, this is Frank, but he found something intresting, in Arizona, where he comes from." Newt told her.
Frank sensed the girl was a witch, but saw she was partially sighted, seeing her gently place a hand on his wing, like Newt would, seeing she had a gentle touch, like Newt squawking softly.
"Kayley, I need to take this egg, to a certain place, you think you can help Frank?" Newt said, seeing her nod seeing him go towards a certain suitcase, making her impressed but sigh.
