TITLE:
Juliet Potter The Girl Who Lived: Book OnePERPETRATOR:
RavenclawSlytherinQueenSUE-O-METER:
(awful) … but, I suspect the rating may get worse as the story progresses. There are so far only two chapters.
COVER/BANNER ART: The cover is black and white. I find the girl on the cover creepy as she reminds me of the girl from the Ring movie.
SUMMARY:”Juliet Potter is the girl-who-lived. She was raised treated horrible by her family and being molested by her Uncle. When was was seven that all changed. Her Uncle was sent to jail and her Aunt did a 180. Intelligent!Female!Harry, Mentor!Snape and Nice!Dudley and Petunia. Full Summery inside” And here is the full summary. ”Juliet Lily Marie Potter is the girl-who-lived. She was raised treated horrible until she was seven when her Aunt and Cousin walked in on Vernon molesting her in the kitchen. Vernon had gone to jail and her Aunt and Cousin treated her like family. She goes to Hogwarts and gets sorted into Ravenclaw befriending people from all the houses.”
FULL NAME: Juliet Lily Marie Potter
SPECIES: “the-girl-who-lived”, or the OC masquerading as a female version of Harry Potter.
HAIR:
EYES:
MARKINGS: “She walked over and looked into the mirror her family told her she was a very beautiful girl, with a petite in her structure, wide innocent emerald eyes and slightly untamable waist length midnight black hair. But all she could see was a small, scrawny, awkward 10 year old girl.”
POSSESSIONS: She's got a pretty room, where as canon Harry got stuck in a room. “So she was wearing tribal striped trapeze tank, with denim capris and high top blue converse.” She also still ends up with Hedwig despite the fact it's now Harry picking out the owl, and not a gift from Hagrid.
CONNECTION TO CANON: The story starts off with a huge paragraph describing how beautiful Juliet's room is, how beautiful she actually looks, but how she gives herself the Bella Swan treatment thinking she's rather plain looking. We then get a flash back to right after Vernon's trial where he “was sentence to 10 years in prison for child abuse, sexually abuse of a child and attempt at murder.” (Really? The scenario according to the summary does not at all match up with the charges.) Petunia at that time decides to reveal that Juliet is actually a witch, and that contrary to Vernon's words of “there's no such thing as magic”, that there really is such a thing. In their discussion Petunia also says, “no, I'm so ashamed of how I treated you.” (Good grief, no.) It then jumps to her going to get her supplies, and bumping into Neville and his grandmother. The shopping follows the order of events from the books, and even lifts some lines from canon during the time her want is picked out. Yes, there are small edits like a mentioning of her godfather despite the fact there shouldn't be. Hunter, the guy she's crushing on, is thirty-one years old, and letting her call him by his first name because he feels old otherwise. (I don't think the writer understands the implications there.) There is also a mentioning of getting ice-cream.
ORIGIN: “Pairing/s- Julie (I think eleven is too young, so unknown pairing, she will have a few crushes), Petunia/MaleOC (Son of Arabella Figg. Name- Hunter Figg) […] Warnings- Alternate Universe, Intelligent!Independent!Ravenclaw!Female!Harry, Nice!Dudley and Petunia, Severitus, and Alternate Universe. This is slightly off canon. sexually abuse mentioned […] Disclaimer-I do not own Harry Potter or any of its characters. I do own half of Juliet. […] Author's Note- So yes I am back and here is the story I told you about. I hope you'll like it. Percy will be Juliet's best friend along with Neville, Cedric, Oliver, and Theodore Nott just to give you fair warning. If you have a couple you think would fit well you can comment on in. As of now I'm favoring Juliet/George or Oliver/Juliet or Juliet/Theodore.” She then finds herself sorted, and despite the conversation which went down in canon the writer doesn't hint at Slytherin, but Ravenclaw.
SPECIAL ABILITIES: Juliet's personality is highly grating - not to mention unnatural. She can tell the twins apart despite just having met them. Juliet gets sorted into Ravenclaw rather then Slytherin. (Gryffindor is understandable because Hermione never told about the houses.) The reason is Harry's intelligence is suddenly brag worthy despite the fact we've had no character development what so ever regarding why this change would occur, and Harry - I mean this Juliet pretending to be Harry - didn't even go to the lengths Hermione did to learn about the world.
NOTES: Quite a few things popped into my head with this one.
First, the use of character exclamation bangs in warnings is just another way for writers to warn their readers that they're making the characters OoC, and can't be bothered either writing the character in character, or actually figuring out how a character's personality would change based on a given situation. The only real difference is you're telling the readers exactly how badly out of character you made said character.
Second, the story isn't just “slightly off canon”, and the fact the writer says “I do own half of Juliet” to me is an admission by said writer that they shoved their OC into the story just so they could self insert themselves into Harry's spot.
Third, I'm not sure how to take Vernon being given Ron the Death Eater treatment in the story. On one side I could see Vernon being a child molester as a possible change if Harry's gender were changed, but it's also not something which one could say would definitely happen. The writer doesn't do anything to try and make the scenario believable, and the whole thing seems like a ploy to give Juliet a sob story which rivals the real Harry Potter. I mean, we're simply told that she's this way. There is one point where Vernon is called a “whale like monster”, and Dudley's eating habits are blamed soley on Vernon.
SAMPLE:
Juliet Potter sat alone in her room staring at the beautifully painted walls in her bedroom. The walls were painted to look like the night sky a mix of blues, violets, and hints of crimson. The black ceiling was painted with light gray clouds and luminescent stars. Her neighbor's son Hunter Figg had painted it as a birthday present; he was a part time artist and a full time interior designers. She walked over and looked into the mirror her family told her she was a very beautiful girl, with a petite in her structure, wide innocent emerald eyes and slightly untamable waist length midnight black hair. But all she could see was a small, scrawny, awkward 10 year old girl. She had just gotten her letter to Hogwarts around three days ago and Aunt Petunia wanted her to look her best because she going you to Diagon Ally a place where the magical community shopped. So she was wearing tribal striped trapeze tank, with denim capris and high top blue converse.
She knew she was a witch. When she was seven, Aunt Petunia had at sat her down, and explained that she was different and she was special. She remembers that day like yesterday.
Juliet had been silent since the Trail. Vernon was sentence to 10 years in prison for child abuse, sexually abuse of a child and attempt at murder. She was thankful Aunt Petunia protected her and kept her name out the paper. Aunt Petunia was sitting as the kitchen table with Dudley when she walked in.
"Julie dear, could you please come here?" Petunia said as she called for Juliet to come.
"What is it Auntie Petunia?" Juliet said as she came into the room and took a seat.
"Well, there are a few things I need to tell you." She said. "Do you remember how we use to call you a Freak?"
Juliet winced at the word but nodded.
"Well, you see your mother, my little sister and her husband James, your dad died when you were a baby. Yes I know I told you this but there is more but they didn't die in a car crash like we said. You see they weren't normal people, they were like you, and they were special. You see, your parents could to magic," Aunt Petunia explained
Juliet scoffed and before she could stop herself she quoted Vernon's favorite words, "There's no such thing as magic."
"Yes there is. Your parent's were a witch and a wizard. And they lived in a place where other witches and wizards lived. Sweetie Julie you're a witch."
