When: June 7, evening
Where: dining room
Summary: Tezuka has a bet to settle.

Echizen always looked forward to dinner, as he had the appetite of about twelve growing teenage boys. Today, he looked forward to dinner for an entirely different reason.

After Echizen sweared in his journal entry, Tezuka scolded him and they ended up having an involved conversation on curse words. To cut to the short of it, the discussion led to Tezuka plan to cuss, loudly, during dinner, in exchange for Echizen avoiding curse words all together (barring accidental swearing). Then, Echizen paid an extra hundred laps for Tezuka to drop the f-bomb.

This better be worth it. Otherwise, he might just swear anyway.

Tezuka finished getting ready and made his way to the dining room. Although the room had a tilt, it was still possible to eat there. He took deep breaths on the way, curious as to how he had agreed to such a ridiculous thing. In his entire life, he had cursed only once and that was practically muffled by the scream of pain that had escaped his lips. Now, with Echizen promising to run one hundred laps plus refrain from cursing except when it was an accident, Tezuka knew he had to make good on the agreement. He didn’t want to disappoint his kouhai.

Arriving at the dining room, he spotted Echizen with six ridiculously full plates in front of him. There was no way the food would last if he didn’t cut back. Something to mention once he sat down. Filling a plate with sushi and picking up chopsticks, he weaved through the mess and sat next to Echizen.

"Rations," he said simply, eyeing the plates.

Oh right, rations. Echizen had forgotten. Though, at this point, it wasn’t like he could go put the food back.

After swallowing, he said, "two of them are for you," and pushed a bowl of rice and a plate of grilled fish to Tezuka. There, rations.

Tezuka eyed the rice and fish then bowed his head in thanks. "You’ll have to cut back to one plate each meal." Looking at what was still left, Tezuka wasn’t sure if that was going to be possible. Maybe once they started hunting on the island, the rations could be bumped back up again.

Chewing on a piece of sushi, he wondered exactly how to say what he was supposed to. It felt awkward just saying it without any context. He almost wished for a shift in the boat or an explosion from Inui’s lab. Swallowing, he turned to Echizen. "Any ideas on how I am supposed to accomplish my task or will you leave it solely up to me?"

One plate, Echizen wrinkled his nose. He understood, but that would leave him so damn hungry. Though, he saw some rather tempting fruit trees on the island. That could help.

Echizen eyed Tezuka for a moment, considering his question. "Che..." Though he was inclined to leave it up to Tezuka, he decided to take mercy and help him out. Stretching his arms out in a yawn, Echizen purposefully knocked a glass of water into Tezuka’s lap.

Tezuka studied the look on Echizen’s face for a brief moment before his glass of water landed in his lap. Cussing was not the first thing that came to mind, but it was definitely a good opportunity.

"Fuck!" he said loudly. He looked anywhere but Echizen, who no doubt would begin a raucous chorus of laughter any second. He really should have ordered two hundred laps.

Oh god, Tezuka really did yell fuck. It took all of Echizen’s willpower to not crack up. Biting on his fist, he only opened his mouth when he knew he wouldn’t laugh to say, "Oops." And now Tezuka looked almost embarrassed.

So, so, worth it.

"Buchou, you should really watch your language," Echizen fought to keep a straight face in the shocked room.

Tezuka shot Echizen a dangerous glare before taking his napkin and trying to siphon as much water off his pants as he could. He felt heat rise to his cheeks as the eyes remained on him.

"I hope you realize," he started. "That the hundred laps are to be ran around the island." Yes, it was a little backhanded, but Tezuka believed it was suitable to have been vague with his kouhai.

Tezuka was blushing. Sneakily, he snagged a picture on his iPhone, blocking the device by taking a sip of Ponta.

This time, it was an accident when Echizen dropped a drink all over his own lap. "Fu --" Echizen started to say, then clamped his mouth shut. Pressing his mouth into a thin line, Echizen frowned at Tezuka and said, "Mada mada dane."

Tezuka cracked a small smile that disappeared just as quickly as the drink dropped into Echizen’s lap. The tennis player has almost slipped, but had covered it before Tezuka could reprimand him. Learning on the fly, just like tennis.

Lifting up the remainder of his glass of water, he took a sip. "Yudan sezu ni ikou, Echizen."

Echizen, not bothering to hide the iPhone this time, managed to snap a picture of the smile. "Che..." with a smirk, he tucked the phone into his Fila bag and wiped the soda off of his lap. "I never do," Echizen tipped his hat and thought about the coming laps with dread. One hundred laps around the island was absurdly far.
All the same, he knew he would do it.

Tezuka eyed the phone as it slipped away. Why was Echizen taking pictures of him? Use for blackmail later on. No, he mustn’t get paranoid. He knew his kouhai better than that. Or at least, he believed so. He let the thought slip from his mind and continue with his meal. Perhaps one hundred was too hasty. He needed someone to play tennis with and if Echizen was running laps, that meant less tennis.

"I shall make you a deal," he said, picking up a piece of fish. "Twenty-five laps, but the building of the tennis court on the island must be postponed until we have shelter."

"Technically, the ship is shelter," albeit, a precarious shelter due to the unreliable nature of the ocean. However, Echizen wasn’t one to protest the reduction of laps; he wanted to be alive enough to actually play tennis. They had courts on the ship. "But fine...if you run them with me," he took a huge bite of his burger.

Training was training. "Very well," Tezuka said. "I shall run them with you." Running on sand could have some positive benefit to tennis. He would bring it up with Inui when he delivered the latest island report to him and Yanagi. "We’ll start tomorrow."

"And a match after," Echizen said after swallowing, confident they would still have enough energy for a game, or at least a high powered volley. What was the point of all that running if they could not play tennis afterward?

Tezuka swallowed a piece of sushi and nodded. "Always." At least after a long enough rest to get them back to the boat without dying in the process. He looked up finally, satisfied that the eyes were now off of him. Never again. "Tennis, in an hour," he said, finishing off his sushi and going back to the fish and rice.

"Always," Echizen replied in a similar fashion before finishing off his burger. After the match, it would be close to bathtime.

When Echizen thought about it, the boat crash didn’t really change anything at all, and that was just fine with him.
