SUMMARY: nick and snake's bromance is so legendary that when they go down, they take the entire bad future reality with them.
After a while, under the circumstances, things had stopped being about who or what you were, even what you had become, let alone any time to spare matters of the heart. When he was younger and still had the energy and urge to do so, maybe Nicholas would have torn apart the rationale of this government, overturning every little detail that was hypocritical, abusive and wrong. Instead, he wondered if somewhere he'd screwed up something that could have prevented this state of shit from going down. But mostly, he had contemplated what to do about it and decided that the best answer was a simple one - "No", in a language that those sick, sad little men playing God would understand.
Sure, for a while the millions of little ways that this world was evil preoccupied his mind. It fueled him for all the years he and Snake had spent, uncovering and analyzing every thought the Capekillers had. It had taken them years, all this damn time, but they'd screened out the genuine psychos in the organisation. The ones with the blood on their hands. It wasn't astrophysics for Nick to figure out which were the poor shmucks who worked the mail room to pay for school and which were the ones with a little too much job satisfaction under this poor excuse for a government.
Between the efforts of David and Nicholas, everything had been ironed out. The Capekillers had never caught on, and never caught or stopped Snake from finding out details. Never once was SHIELD blood shed nor any safehouses compromised. No innocents were in the building when the Hulk came to visit - he and Snake had made damn sure of it. The only thing left to worry about was that whatever was left of the Capekillers and still willing to do their job was gonna be really, really pissed off.
He and Snake had made sure that Maria, Natasha, Alex, Daisy, Clint, Jack, and everyone else with any reason to be at this rendezvous point all had orders to check the damage across town. And now, they did what neither man had done in years - they waited.
