Have to go to NYC

I am leaving for New York Wednesday to testify in an arbitration case for work.  Last year when I was the acting Postmaster in Portsmouth I denied someone a transfer from New York.  Her attendance record showed that she had quite a few absences and pretty much didn't come to work.  She had a glowing recommendation from a supervisor, however.

Portsmouth is small as compared to other cities when you talk about employees.  Everyone is needed to perform their job and expected to come to work.  There is a definite impact when someone isn't there.  I have to protect the interests of the customers and the post office.  I didn't take the transfer and she filed a grievance.  The grievance has gone through several internal hearings and now is with an external arbitrater.  It amazed me how people want to cry when they don't get thier way.  They screw up and then expect everone else to suffer.

My reasons for not taking the transfer were many but the major ones were her attendance record and her work performance.  The labor people in New York questioned how I was able to establish her work performance.  It was simple, if you are not at work then you have no performance.  Then her superviors said he worked with her for a year and a half.  He said she was a good, dependable employee.  Once again, if you don't come to work how are you dependable???  Sounds to me like he wanted to get rid of her.  I have never written a recommendation for an employee that was not the truth.  If I have someone that works for me that is a problem, I am not going to push that employee off on someone else.

So I will be going to New York (costing over 1500) to explain why I didn't want an employee who didn't know how to come to work.  It's a shame that we have to defend those types of decisions, especially when the answer is pretty clear.  But Oh Well.......
