Marui did his best not to avoid Niou today. Which was a pretty easy task. Or not, since he didn't actually see Niou. He was late for breakfast because he'd locked himself up in the showers in the morning. Marui was also late for lunch because he had to stay behind and clean up after the team. And by that time, he realized Niou never really did set up a time and place for them to meet up, so he wasn't really avoiding him after all. And besides, Niou had his cameras set up around camp, he'd find Marui easily if he just monitored them.
Which was why Marui was just sitting on one of the benches next to a vending machine, eating a candy bar and staring off into space, a bottle of Ponta next to him. It was a pretty nifty code, what Yanagi gave him. This was the second free candy bar he had that day and he felt pretty awesome about it. Because it was a candy bar, and it was free. But the happy-good feelings didn't last long, the knowledge of Niou coming for him at any moment dampened his spirits. Marui sighed and bit off a big chunk on the candy bar.
Niou had spotted Marui on one of his feeds as he perused them at his leisure and he chuckled quietly. Of course, he was by the vending machines. He grabbed a handful of change and took off out the door to head down to the machines himself. Niou rattled the change idly as he reached the machines, his eyes only quickly skimming over Marui as he dropped first one coin then another into the drink machine so he could get an ice coffee out of it. He popped open the top and put the can to his lips to take a drink as he slid his eyes sideways to watch Marui.
When Marui noticed Niou, he'd opened his mouth to say something, but he was afraid that it'd be something stupid so he ignored Niou instead and finished his Ponta. He thought about what he'd tell Niou. He was pretty sure he mentally wrote down a whole speech for him this morning, but he'd forgotten what it was. All he remembered from it was calling Niou a "lying perverted bastard who deserved a kick in the nuts." It was only after he threw away the empty can and finished his candy bar that he spoke. "The hell did you take so long to find me, jerk?"
With a snicker, Niou moved to plop down on the bench beside Marui, his legs stretched out in front of him, and he absently continued to sip at his coffee. "I finally gave up on you trying to figure out when to approach me." He took a few more sips before he tossed the empty can into the garbage and rested his hands behind his head. Niou watched Marui expectantly for a few moments before he finally snorted and shook his head. "Look, out here in the hallway probably isn't the best place for the conversation that we're about to have. We can head to one of the lounges."
Marui felt nervous. He couldn't help it. Niou made him feel nervous and wary of everything. He was the only one who did. Not even Sanada who could slap him into a concussion made him feel nauseous and excited and clammy and all weird-like all at the same time. "I'm not going anywhere you're monitoring," he said, leaning on the wall and crossing his arms. Though of course, if Niou found him here, then he was monitoring this hallway. Niou'd just have to choose a different place. Besides, if Niou planned on molesting him when they were alone, Marui should deny him the pleasure of watching it over and over through his video feeds.
"It's either that or a bedroom." Niou raised his hands in the air and shrugged a little before he stood up. "But if that's the way you want it, Oshitari's out visiting his own redhead for a bit, and there's no telling how long he's gonna be gone. We could head back to mine, if you wanted." He placed his hands in his pockets and gave a little shrug as he slid his gaze sideways in order to look at Marui. The poor thing, he looked absolutely miserable. Niou didn't know whether he should feel sorry for him or accomplished in the fact that he'd wormed his way so far under Marui's skin.
If there was anything Marui had learned the past few days (and weeks), it was never to be alone with Niou in a room. Especially since he'd dreamed that he was locked in Niou's room and-- Marui shook the thought away. He did not want to remind himself. "Fine," Marui groaned. "Let's hit the lounges then." He sighed, hesitating to get up and move to the lounges. There should be one down the hall, if Marui remembered correctly. Reluctantly, Marui did get up, but instead of walking straight to the lounges, he paused in front of the vending machine first. He needed something to calm himself down, and Yanagi won't mind if he got all three of his surprise candy out in one day. "Lead the way," Marui said, tearing open the package and biting into the candy bar.
Niou grinned and nodded; he figured there was no way that he was going to get Marui into his room any time soon. He took off down the hallway, his hands still in his pockets, and he stopped at the lounge area. Niou poked his head in first to make sure the room was empty, and upon finding that it was he headed inside and immediately moved to one of the plush couches to take a seat. He patted the spot next to him and grinned up at Marui. "Have a seat."
Marui ignored the space next to Niou and settled down on the farthest side. "I hate you," he said. They were supposed to "talk about it" after all, and Marui had decided to start. And he did hate Niou. To think he used to think of him as a really good friend. They'd been together since junior high! But not.. together together. Niou was only like that to Yagyuu, and Marui was definitely not Yagyuu, who liked to dress up as Niou and fool around with him. It all made Marui's blood boil.
"I see." Niou tapped his chin as if he was really mulling this statement over and he finally looked down the row of seats to Marui, an eyebrow raised quizzically. "Is there any specific reason why you hate me, or is this some sort of 'if I think I hate him enough, I'll start feeling all weird when he bothers me' kind of hate?" The conversation he had had with Yagyuu stayed at the forefront of Niou's thoughts; he knew Marui was jealous, he just didn't know if there was any sort of way he'd be able to mollify it.
Marui turned his head to glare at Niou. "It's the kind of 'I hate you' that makes me want to hit you over the head with a sledgehammer," Marui hissed. "What kind of fucking question is that anyway?!" He crossed his arms, huffed and slumped back in his seat. Niou better not move closer to him or he will punch him in the face. "I hate you because you're a goddamn jerk who likes to play around with people, that's why!" Marui knew there was more to it than just that, but he couldn't quite remember at the moment. He was too mad at Niou to remember.
Niou sighed and ran a hand through his hair and then over his face before he bowed his head forward with a groan. "You still think I'm playing around with you, don't you?" He reached up and tugged at his hair a bit before he finally turned to face Marui fully. Niou leaned forward, his elbows planted on his knees. "What in the fucking hell do I have to do to convince you that I'm not fucking around here? Go stand on the roof and shout it to the heavens or something?"
"Oh, why don't you stop acting like you're not?" Marui said, seething, his fists were balled against his sides. He kept himself from launching at Niou and hitting him. He wasn't wild like Akaya. Unless, of course, Niou provoked him enough. "You've always liked to play tricks on me. It's not funny anymore, you fucking lying bastard!" Okay, so maybe he's overdoing it with the swearing and cussing, but he didn't think he could get his point across if he didn't add them. And he was still angry at Niou. And hated him.
"Okay, look," Niou stood up, a hand furiously mussing with his hair. He whirled around and gazed down at Marui, his arms crossed over his chest. "Yeah, so, I like to play jokes on people. I get a kick out of it. But I fuck with brains, Bunta, not with hearts. There's a difference, alright? You fuck with their brain, you leave 'em confused for a while but they get over it. You fuck with the heart, and you crush 'em completely. And if you crush someone completely, they're not any fun to play with anymore. Why the hell would I wanna go and break one of my favorite toys, huh? Now for the last god damn time, I'm not playing around here."
Honestly, what Niou said stung a little. Marui couldn't even look at him directly. Even so, Marui still felt angry at him. Not as much as before, maybe, but it was there. "You're still a jerk," Marui said, rubbing at his eye, sniffing. "You've been playing with blocks and toy soldiers," he continued, almost whining. "You can't even tell when one of your toys is all broken up inside." And he resented being compared to a toy. He wanted to kick Niou for it.
"Well think of it this way." Niou put his hands on his hip now, giving Marui a half-hearted glower as he looked at him. "If I didn't really wanna do anything with you, do you really think I would keep trying like this? Do you honestly believe that I would continue to pursue someone who hits me every time I get near him? Is there anyone you know that would put up with something like that? I know you're broken, but for fuck's sake, every time I try to fix you you call me a liar!"
"That's because you are a liar!" Marui yelled, standing up and glaring at Niou. Except, now that he thought about it, Niou actually never did lie to him. Not even about him and Yagyuu, but the way Yagyuu told him made him feel as if he was being toyed around with. Then again, it wasn't Yagyuu's fault. Marui closed his eyes and took a deep breath. "You don't want me," he said, turning around, back to Niou. "You don't really want me. I'm not Yagyuu. That's why..." Maybe this whole talking thing wasn't such a good idea.
Niou groaned quietly and pinched the bridge of his nose. "You're so dense sometimes, you know that? If I wanted Yagyuu, I would have Yagyuu. I don't want Yagyuu. And frankly, I'm getting a little tired of you yanking me around like this. Every damn time I think I'm getting somewhere with you, bam, you decide to take a fucking prissy bitch trip and go back to shutting yourself off to me. Get the hell over your jealousy already, will you? It's tiring and emotionally draining." Niou finally flopped back down on the couch again and put a hand over his eyes, tired. "If I weren't so god damn into you I'd have given up on you ages ago. But, no, I gotta keep trying."
It was getting harder and harder to be in the same room as Niou and Marui knew it was all his fault. He hadn't seen Niou so... dejected before. It felt like a stab to the heart, really. "I'm not jealous," was all Marui could say at the moment, sitting back down on the couch, pouting. He kept silent for a while, not really knowing what to say or do. Obviously, he was the bad guy. Not Niou. "Why me?" Marui asked moments later. He still couldn't look at Niou. "I mean... I'm just like what you said. Dense, and a prissy bitch and I keep beating you up... Why me and not Yagyuu?" It sounded much, much better in his head.
"Why you?" Niou dropped his hand away and gazed up at the ceiling. That was a good question, wasn't it? He could think of a million reasons why he'd pick anyone but Marui, but as for reasons to pick him... He finally shrugged a little and let out a laugh. "You know, I don't know. I just...there's something there. Fuck if I know what it is. You're cute as hell, for one thing. And spirited. And you get so fucking happy when someone puts something filled with sugar in front of you. Yagyuu is...Yagyuu. The other side of my coin. Who wants to date someone attached to their back?"
Marui frowned. "I'm not cute," he said. "Cute is for girls. Or Akaya when he first came to Rikkai and challenged Yukimura." Usually, he hit anyone who called him cute. But this wasn't what you could call 'usual'. Nothing was ever usual or normal when Niou was around. He looked at Niou, still frowning. "You make me sound like I'm some sugar freak," he said. He wasn't. He just liked cakes and pastries and candy. That did not make him a sugar freak.
Niou let out a low chuckle, which eventually grew more and more until he was just laughing like an idiot, bent over at the waist. He pulled himself upright eventually and wiped at his eyes before he turned his head to look at Marui. "Did you even listen to what you just said? 'Not a sugar freak' my ass." Niou shook his head and combed his fingers through his hair. "Alright, fine. Not cute, then. You're good looking. Fucking gorgeous. All fine china doll features and bubble gum hair but a personality too explosive to maintain the image for long."
"Don't laugh at me!" Marui threw one of the pillows on the couch at Niou and missed. "I am not a sugar freak, damnit! Stop laughing!" This was embarrassing. First they were arguing and now Niou was laughing at him. Very, very embarrassing. It didn't make sense. Nothing made sense anymore. "And my hair isn't bubblegum!" Marui was blushing. He knew because his ears felt hot. He really couldn't explain why.
During Marui's little rant, Niou had slid his way over so he sat next to the redhead. He slid an arm around Marui's waist and leaned in to nuzzle his nose a little against the side of Marui's head, a grin on his face. "You're blushing," Niou muttered quietly, and he barely resisted the urge to nip the pink tip of Marui's ear. "You like me complimenting you, don'cha."
"I'm not blushing!" Marui denied, his hands moving up to cover his cheeks. Not that it would help, Niou was too close. Marui tried to see if he could squirm away from Niou-- which he found he couldn't, as one of Niou's arms had sneakily made it's way around him. He could only look away. "N-no way! You're just embarrassing me!" Not that he didn't like the compliments, of course.
"And if I told you that I like the sound of your voice, or the way you smell, the way you taste, the way your skin feels underneath my fingers when you actually let me touch you...You wouldn't like that at all, either? You wouldn't blush more?" Niou hummed quietly and continued to absently nose through Marui's hair. "You're right. Your hair isn't bubble gum. It's cotton candy."
Marui was going to say no. He was going to say no and push Niou away but all he could do was whimper and blush a little harder. Niou's nose in his hair wasn't that much help, either. It sent weird tingles down Marui's spine, and he could feel goosebumps on his arms. "O-okay, that's enough," Marui said-- almost squeaking actually. "You win, get off me!"
Niou shook his head a little and pulled it back in order to look at Marui. "Uh uh. I haven't actually won yet. Not until I can actually say you're mine." Absently he tightened his hold on Marui, just a little bit, and he toyed with the hem of the redhead's shirt, wondering if he should slip his hand up underneath it. Probably not. "Little victories, but I'm still working on the war."
"And how are you going to do that, put a collar around my neck with a tag that says, 'Property of Niou'?" Marui pouted at Niou, lower lip pushed out (it worked wonders on Jackal). "I told you I'm not an animal. And I'm not a toy, either!" Marui finally had the chance to hit Niou for calling him that earlier. And he did, lightly on the shoulder. Then Marui crossed his arms across his chest. "I already said you won, didn't I? Stop making it even more complicated!"
"Nothing so crass," Niou muttered with a quiet snicker. "I plan on making my mark," he brought up his free hand and tapped at Marui's chest, "right here. And until I have, this battle ain't over." His lips twitched into a grin and he slowly slid that hand up until he had a hold of Marui's chin. "Let me kiss you again. Without you hitting me, this time."
That did it. Marui could feel his heart jump to his throat, and a mass of butterflies flutter in his stomach. It was his dream all over again. Niou had him trapped with no way to escape, and his ears felt like they were burning. "I..." Marui looked away, practically whimpering. He was panicking inside, and was very confused, and wanted to flail his arms and hit Niou, and then hide in a corner. Marui swallowed that lump in his throat and mustered up all the courage he could get. "Fine," he said. "But if you do anything funny, I'll have to hit you."
Hey, he was already a step ahead of where he was normally at. Marui wasn't hitting him yet. Niou tipped the redhead's chin up and looked him over for a brief second before he leaned down to press their lips together; lightly, at first, as Niou decided to allow Marui to get used to the pressure. He tipped his head eventually though in order to get a better angle and he pressed a little more.
First, Marui wondered if he should have brushed his teeth first, because he was sure he smelled and tasted like caramel and nougat. Second, his hands went up in front of Niou's shoulders, just in case he needed to push him away and hit him, if Niou does molest him. And third, Marui felt everything just stop; his breath, his heartbeat, all except for that same tingly feeling he got from the lockers, from that time with the cheesecake, and from his dream. It didn't make him uncomfortable, no, but it was strange... and yet, not entirely an unwelcome feeling. Marui jumped, gasping, when Niou pressed further. He wasn't really expecting that.
Niou liked the gasp. Niou liked the gasp quite a bit. He tightened his hold on Marui to keep the redhead from moving away from him and he slid his other hand up into the boy's hair. Niou cradled Marui's head as his lean caused it to tip backwards, and slowly he pulled his lips back in order to draw out kiss after kiss. With a soft hum he finally pulled away, though not before he nipped at Marui's bottom lip.
Marui opened his eyes. He was a little surprised since he didn't remember closing them. He was also surprised to find that his arms were around Niou. Marui didn't remember doing that, either. He squeaked and pushed himself away from Niou, blushing and very embarrassed, and kept his hands to himself. "Sorry," he muttered, not even sure what he was apologizing for. What the hell was wrong with him now?!
"What the hell are you apologizing for?" Niou asked quietly. He brought his hand up from Marui's waist and absently raked his fingers through soft red hair as his other hand had fallen away when Marui had moved. His hair was incredibly soft; it really was like cotton candy. "Don't know why you'd go sayin' you're sorry..."
"Oh, shut up," Marui said, not sounding irritated at all. He bit his lower lip, glancing up at Niou, who was playing with his hair. He was 120% sure he didn't have dandruff, because that was a turn off. And he wasn't sure why he'd thought that. "'m not sure why I'm saying sorry to you, too," Marui confessed. But it did feel kind of nice, Niou's hand on his head.
"Well, as long as neither one of us knows why..." Niou chuckled quietly and continued to absently stroke Marui's hair, his fingernails lightly scraping across his scalp. Really, Niou just wanted to get in there and kiss him again, deeper this time and longer, but he had a feeling that wouldn't be too well received. He tipped his head to the side and grinned. "So did you like that one?"
Marui leaned a little into the hand on his head, lips pursing. He didn't know what to answer Niou. He wasn't sure what the right thing to say was. "I..." Marui's ears felt hot again. It was almost a regular happening now. "I'm not really sure," Marui said, pausing a while to think for a bit. He licked his lips, looked up at Niou and maybe smiled. "Can't say I've been kissed enough to know what's good or not."
Ah hah. Was that some sort of okay? Maybe? Niou chuckled quietly and finally pulled his hand away from Marui's head. He tipped his own head to the side and returned the smile. "Well, if you ever wanna experience a little more, you know who to come to. I'll certainly never turn you down." To say the least. Actually, if Niou had his way, he'd have Marui come begging him for more sooner or later.
"A-aah, sure," Marui looked away. He wasn't sure why he said what he did, but Niou's reply made him grin like an idiot and he didn't want Niou to see. "Not that I will, or anything," Marui added.
"Mmhm. I'm sure you won't." Niou chuckled quietly and finally drew away from Marui completely in order to stand up and stretch. "Well, I have things to do, videos to rip and record, you know, the usual." He looked over his shoulder and gave Marui a wink. "You know where to find me when you need me." With that, he rested his hands behind his head and wandered out of the lounge, whistling to himself.
