Who: Kamio Akira and Tachibana An
What: Kamio confesses. Shot doooooooown.
When: A few days ago, after dinnertime
Where: The pool.
Rating: PG-13. Because you have to be a teenager to understand that much horrible pain :(
Kamio was at the pool, sitting down with his tennis shoes kicked off and pants rolled up to his knees. It was quiet like he'd thought, luckily...not the most romantic place in the world, but Kamio didn't really want to confess in front of everyone. Especially not that stupid Momoshiro...or anyone else for that matter. A glance at his watch told him that he was still early, and he leaned back on his palms to watch the door.
An had the best birthday ever. She'd gotten presents from her brother, and Momo, and Miyuki-chan... An was rocking the hairclips her brother had gotten her, and the cake Momo had delivered had made her incredibly happy. Now she was off to sneak into the pool with Kamio! "Kamio-kun!" An waved, and closed the door to the pool behind her. Saeki wasn't sitting by the pool, so it was probably against the rules they were there.
Well, yeah, there were pool hours...but no one ever listened to those, did they? Kamio shifted as he stood to his feet, heart beating fast when the younger Tachibana ran up to him. He smiled nervously, rubbing the back of his head and tossing his hair back to one side. "An-chan! Um - I ...happy birthday!" He stammered, trying to get his rhythm back in order, instead of going haywire like it tended to do.
"Thanks." An primped her hair, showing off the wicked hair clips her brother had gotten her. "So, what'd you want to talk about?" Slipping her shoes and socks off An sat on the edge of the pool and dipped her feet in like Kamio had been doing earlier.
Kamio flopped down boyishly next to her, waving his feet in the water slowly as he stared down. "Well....I...y'see." He started, trying to steel his nerves, clinging to the edge of the pool. "An-chan...last year was really fun, y'know....and this year's really fun too, especially everyone being so busy and I know Fudomine'll be really great this year and." He paused in his rambling. "Um. ...An-chan. I...really like.... spending time with you." There was a start. "I mean, I really like....you." He stopped, wondering how to clarify it. "I like like you."
An swung her feet in the pool water. She nodded to Kamio's statements about how great the year had been. Last year had been great, and this year was shaping up to be pretty good too. "I like spending time with you too Kamio-kun." An bit her bottom lip. She had been wondering if Kamio was going to say that. She'd had one or two confessions since coming to Fudomine, and some of them had taken being turned down okay, and some hadn't. An didn't want to hurt Kamio. "I like you too Kamio." An sighed. "But, I don't Like like you."
Oh. Well. That had been fast. After a moment of taking it all in, Kamio glanced up at her, biting his lower lip hard. He pulled his feet out of the water, content to just sit at the edge. "You..." He frowned softly, and ran a hand through his hair, trying not to say something any more stupid than he'd already said. "So you don't...like like me. Like....that." He understood, really. He sighed, shoulders slumping. "Not even a little?"
Kamio just looked so hurt. An really wanted to hug him, but that would probably be taken the wrong way. "K-Kamio-kun..." Could she make this hurt less? No, and trying might make it hurt more. "I'm sorry. I really do like you but just as a friend."
"Yeah." Kamio answered softly. He always knew it was a possibility. More than a possibility...he figured that was how it was. The redhead frowned, wondering what to say now, feeling terribly awkward and his chest hurting a little. "At least we ...can still be friends."
"And you can still make me mix CD's." An stated. "I really liked the last one. Good dance music, Kamio-kun." An's tone might be lighthearted, but her smile was wistful. She kind of wished she had been able to like Kamio. Her brother trusted Kamio far more than he trusted the true object of An's desires. Though that might have changed if Kamio and An started dating.
"...Yeah." Kamio sighed, thinking of the last songs he'd put on An-chan's CD. He had a feeling he wouldn't be able to listen to them anymore. The redhead sat still for a second, kicking his feet in the water, almost having the urge to just jump in with all of his clothes on. Maybe that would not be a great idea, though. "I really liked it too."
"Do they play them during DDR?" An sighed. She scooted closer to Kamio and leaned her head on his shoulder. "I'm sorry Kamio-kun. I really am."
"Some of them." Kamio was silent for a while, somewhat uncomfortable with An leaning on his shoulder. It felt almost like it would be better if she were mad at him, slapped him and left. It'd be better than her being all ...sweet...and...he kind of wanted to cry now. Not that he would in front of An-chan, no.
An sat back up. "Kamio-kun... we can still be friends right? You're not. You're not going to avoid me?" An made large doe eyes at Kamio. It would be easier if Shinji was here. He could comfort Kamio. Maybe she should call Shinji tonight.
"Hah..I -...An-chan, I don't....know?" Kamio swallowed the lump in his throat, really, really trying not to lose face in front of her. Especially when she turned those eyes on him. "I mean...it'll....be hard. For a while. But you're still....my friend....and I'll still be yours too, it'll just..." Be really odd to not constantly try to win her affections. Kamio shook his head. "I can't really promise it'll be the same." Just to add insult to injury, his voice cracked, immediately causing him to bury his head in his hands.
"Oh." An had fingered. She really... .she wanted to hug Kamio, or something. An wanted to ruffle his hair too and say it would be alright. "I'm sorry." An stood up and flicked some water off her toes. "I... I should go Kamio-kun." She should email Shinji tonight.
"Yeah." Kamio nodded, standing as well. "I - gotta go back too. It's pretty late." He hesitated asking her if she wanted him to walk her to her door. Stupidly, he felt like that would make everything just worse. "You're okay, right?" On the other hand, a young girl as pretty as An walking the hallways was ....worrisome.
"I'm good Kamio. My room isn't too far away, and I should be able to sneak back without anyone spotting me." An gave in and ruffled Kamio's hair. "I'll see you around tomorrow."
Kamio almost flinched at the touch, even knowing it was coming eventually. "Yeah. Tomorrow." After she'd left, he sighed, kicking his feet in the water around a little more, staring at the water. It took him a full fifteen minutes before he'd even thought of getting up, and another five minutes just to manage to drag himself up to bed and zone out to music, trying hard not to compare the sad, droning lyrics to his morose teenage life that was without An-chan.
