Who: Atobe and Yukimura
Where: Atobe's Room
What: BITCH FIGHT! Except, not really. Yukimura goes to have a talk with Atobe about Sanada.
Yukmura was absolutely seething. Atobe had the balls to go and dump Sanada - which was bad enough on its own - over the fucking internet. Really. Was Atobe that much of a coward, that he couldn't face up to it and do it face to face?
He'd stormed all the way to Atobe's room, and was now pacing outside the door, attempting to calm himself down somewhat. His impulse was to slam open the door, grab Atobe by the collar of his shirt, and shove him up against a wall, but Yukimura knew that that would get nothing done but build even more negativity into the situation. If he wanted anything accomplished, he had to take a more diplomatic approach.
...As soon as he settled down some.
Atobe sat on his bed, his homework strung out over it and sent a glare to the door. Someone had chosen his room to pace in front of and they had a good five seconds before he went out there and explained why that was a bad idea.
Yukimura debated punching a wall, but all that would get him was a set of bruised knuckles. He wished he'd thought of going and playing tennis first, blowing off some steam that way, but no. Here he was, and he wasn't going to turn back.
Finally, he decided he was as calm as he was going to get, stepped up to the door, and knocked. He'd feel really stupid getting so worked up if Inui was in there, and not Atobe.
Atobe sighed and tried not to fling his text book to the floor. "It's open." He started to gather up his things to put them away, in case his visitor was staying. Normally Jiroh didn't knock though.
Yukimura took one last deep breath before opening the door, and forced himself to hold onto the knob instead of letting go, in case instinct worked over will and he ended up slamming it. "We need to talk." There was no question about his mood.
Atobe cast him a glance then slid his homework into his bag. "I don't really have anything I need to say to you." Well, he did. But talking and yelling were two different verbs. Atobe wanted to tell Yukimura a lot of things, but it wouldn't calm the situation down any.
"Then all you have to do is listen. I've got enough to say for the both of us, I'm sure." He closed the door carefully behind him, not wanting to let it slam, and not wanting their conversation to be so easily overheard by passers-by. "First of all, breaking up with someone over the internet is not something I would have expected of someone like you, who is supposedly so far above the rest of the world. It's a shameful, coward's way out."
"Well, finding out you're being cheated on over the internet is hardly much better," Atobe said. "I don't think you have any room to talk about expected behavior."
"Genichirou was not cheating on you. Never once. He and I have been friends since childhood. Handholding is, for us, perfectly normal, ordinary behavior. Nothing more than friendship in it, no matter what you might think. We've held hands thousands of times in our lives. We've had dinner together thousands of times in our lives. This particular incident was simply one more time. Nothing for you to get threatened about, Atobe." Yukimura tried to keep his voice calm, even if he felt he wasn't doing a very good job of it.
"He said that there was something between you," Atobe said, trying really hard not to fling his calculator at Yukimura's head. "And that it was interfering with the two of us. That sounds like something to be threatened over." Yukimura wasn't going to talk his way out of this.
Yukimura sighed and rubbed at the bridge of his nose. "He has feelings for me. I know that, and I can't - and won't - deny it. And I won't lie and say that I don't have feelings for him in return. But I didn't understand any of that until he was already dating you. I missed my chance, and because he is so important to me, I'm willing to give up a second one to make him happy." He stuck his hands in his pockets. "He has feelings for you too, you know. He's been miserable since you ended it."
Atobe sat his calculator down carefully, his grip on it was getting rather tight. Atobe replayed that in his head, trying to find the trap that had to be there. Yukimura couldn't be serious. "Are you begging me to take him back?"
Yukimura laughed. "No, Atobe. I would never beg, to anyone, for anything. I am..." How to phrase this... "Asking that you reconsider." It hurt to say it, but it was true. If Atobe really, truly didn't want Sanada back, ever, then Yukimura would gladly take him. But he was giving Atobe the opportunity to fix his mistake first.
"If I did," Atobe said, standing. He looked Yukimura in the eye. "He'd still want you, and nothing would have changed."
"Perhaps. But if I take him, he'll still want you. We're in the same boat, here, Atobe. Regardless of which one of us he's with, he'll still want the other, too." He held Atobe's eyes, not backing down from what felt a bit like an unspoken challenge.
"I think I just proved I can't handle being with him if he'll be wanting you," Atobe admitted. Yukimura should just take Sanada and deal. Atobe would move on eventually, whether he wanted to or not.
Yukimura walked over to Atobe's desk and leaned back against it. "And I know for a fact that I wouldn't handle being with him while he wants you. As I said, we're in the same situation, here." He crossed his arms over his chest and his legs at the ankles. "And because I expected as much, I have an idea, if you're willing to listen."
Atobe didn't have an idea on how they could proceed from here. This sounded pretty stalemate and was leaving Sanada out in the cold. Atobe didn't really want to do that.
"I'm listening."
"We could...share him." For lack of a better way to phrase it, because really, that made it sound like Sanada was some kind of material possession. "I think he'd be happiest to have us both."
Share? Atobe hadn't shared anything before, let alone a boyfriend. "Are you serious?"
Yukimura shot Atobe a look that asked are you stupid? "Of course I'm serious. It would be one hell of a bad joke, otherwise."
"We can't handle sharing his brain space, you think we can handle sharing the whole thing?" Atobe was very doubtful, but he admitted he was a little interested. It would be a rather unique contest really, to try to outdo Yukimura on an even playing field.
Yukimura sighed and uncrossed his arms, resting the heels of his hands against the edge of the desk. Crossed arms was generally hostile or defensive body language, and that wasn't how he wanted to seem. "Look at it this way. It's one thing to have him, and watch his mind wander and not know where it's going. But we know where it's ending up. If he actually has both of us, he's less likely to space out thinking about the other. We'll have his full attention, when he's with us. Isn't that better?"
"Maybe," Atobe said, trying to give the idea some honest thought. "And I guess we'd find out fast if it wasn't." But agreeing would get Sanada's hopes up, and if Atobe realized he couldn't handle this, he'd be dumping him a second time. Though, he'd still have Yukimura, for real this time. . . . "Ok. We'll have to think up some rules so we don't step on each other's toes, but I'm willing to try."
Yukimura smiled a little - not smirked, but really, truly smiled. Atobe was, at least, being reasonable about it. And...what was the worst that could happen? If it didn't work, it didn't work. "I'm a step ahead of you, there. I have an idea for that, too. We'd have to work out a schedule. For example. Sunday through Tuesday is my time with him. Thursday through Saturday is yours. Wednesday...is his choice. Either he gets neither of us, or both of us." It was up for negotiation, of course, but that was the general idea.
"That seems pretty sound," Atobe agreed, all things considered. He still couldn't believe they were about to do this. Though neither of them would be the better option there, watching Yukimura with Sanada would only lead him to trouble.
"There is one, key rule, though. Should Gen choose one of us over the other, the one not chosen has to let go." Honestly, Yukimura doubted Sanada would be able to pick one of them over the other, but who knew. Sanada might surprise him.
"I agree." That's what Atobe had just done, assumed that Sanada would chosen Yukimura over him. And if he did choose Atobe, he'd want Yukimura long gone.
Yukimura let out a sigh of relief. That had gone...much better than he'd expected. Atobe wasn't nearly as bad as Yukimura had imagined he might be, and, as he took the time to really look at the other man, he found that he could see the physical attraction, at the very least. Not that he'd tell Atobe that. "Since you're agreeing to this...I assume you must still have feelings for Genichirou. Which is why I'm going to tell you that you...might want to have a talk with Kabaji. He beat up Gen, pretty badly."
Atobe gave a start. Well, he had sent Kabaji on Sanada, because he'd been upset, and Sanada had deserved it. He wasn't going to tell Yukimura about that though. "Aa, I will." He had told Kabaji to hurt him just a little, maybe they needed to have a talk about relativity.
Yukimura raised an eyebrow at the start, but assumed it was because he hadn't expected such a thing. He gave a nod, appreciating that Atobe didn't think he was being lied to about it. "I still think you and I should make some kind of effort to at least get along. It'll make everything easier, both on us and on Gen." He gave another considering look. "Though I will say, so far, it seems you're not as bad as I was afraid you might be."
Atobe snorted. He wasn't sure he wanted to know just how bad that way. "People find me perfectly reasonable, Yukimura. It's the people who don't know anything, that assume otherwise."
Yukimura shrugged. "I won't deny that you're proving me wrong. And I don't say that easily." Like apologizing, admitting he was wrong was something Yukimura seldom did, and hated every time. But he knew when it was necessary. "The few times I've seen you, or even interacted with you, you've had this aire about you like you think you're better than everyone else. An attitude like that is hard to get past, even if it is a misconception."
Atobe's eyes slid off to the side, as if he had to think on it. "I was raised to behave in a certain manner. I'm sure I make others feel inferior." It's not something Atobe went out of his way to achieve though. What Atobe thought of as refined, others might find. . . snotty.
Yukimura thought about that, then nodded. He could understand it. Coming from one of Japan's elite families...Atobe would come out like that. He'd probably been raised that he was better than everyone else. He could see the similarities between them, when he thought about it like that, despite the fact that Yukimura's family was hardly one of the elite, he'd still been taught not to be intimidated, that anyone who tried wasn't worth his time. "I'm curious...and, I won't try to make you answer if you don't want to, but...is there anything that intimidates you?"
Atobe didn't look Yukimura in the eye. You do. Your tennis, too. "Oh, a couple things, I'm sure. Some things one cannot ignore." He'd tried.
"That surprises me," Yukimura admitted. And now he was curious about what, but considering that they weren't exactly best of friends, Yukimura thought better of asking him to specify. "But you're right. Some things can't be ignored."
"I'm sure there must be something out there that intimidates you, Yukimura," Atobe said, though he was pretty sure he wasn't it. "If only just a little."
Yukimura thought about that. He was tempted to simply say that no, there wasn't, and leave it at that but it was only fair. Atobe had answered him, after all. The trick was...figuring out what actually did intimidate him. ".........Things I can't control," he replied softly, after a long pause.
Atobe looked at Yukimura then, several things clicking into place about him that he really should have figured out long before. When he first saw Yukimura after he started dating Sanada, Yukimura had been bleeding out disapproval, perhaps, because Yukimura had absolutely no control over it. "Mm, that bothers me too."
"I imagine so. We do have some things in common, I'm noticing. Yukimura found himself staring down at the floor, at his shoes. There was one thing that downright terrified him, that he'd never even admitted to Sanada. His greatest fear. And here he was considering telling Atobe.
When Yukimura brought it up, he could admit to himself that, yes, they did have some things in common. "We do. I suspect, even more than we realize." Atobe tilted his head as a curious thought struck him. "Under different circumstances, we might already be friends."
Yukimura blinked. Friends? Them? Well....now that he thought about it.... "Well...who says it's too late? With this agreement, we're not exactly rivals anymore, so...why not at least give it a shot? It certainly can't hurt."
"No, it can't," Atobe agreed. He'd been thoroughly pissed with Yukimura when he walked into the room. It's hard to get worse than that. "We should probably make good on that tea date." It wasn't until after it left his mouth that he realized he'd used the word date, and he hoped Yukimura didn't notice. He'd have to examine that slip later.
Yukimura nodded. "We should. And I do still want to play you, sometime before the camp is over. I think it would be fun. I'm so used to playing challenging people whose moves I already know like the back of my hand that it...kind of takes the fun out of it, sometimes."
Atobe had no doubt that Yukimura would probably beat him soundly. But if his Kouri no Sekai had worked on trapping Sanada's Fuurinkazan, there was hope yet. "We'll have to make arrangements for that then." Atobe had snuck unofficial matches into camp before. That's what got him caught up with Sanada.
"Absolutely. ...Oh, and, that reminds me. I have other arrangements to make as well." LIke to get Sanada out of that room with Kabaji. Yukimura didn't want Sanada to have to look at the guy who beat him up, even if Atobe talked to Kabaji about it and ensured there'd be no more incidents.
Atobe nodded, that sounded like the end of the conversation. "Who's off to tell him?"
"Mm. I think you should. You have to repair your relationship with him, after all. Though if you'd rather wait until we both can, that would be fine." Yukimura was planning to go straight to whoever was in charge of rooming assignments to see about moving Sanada before he forgot.
Atobe shifted from where he'd been leaning against the night stand. "I'll go talk to him." Yukimura was right. He needed to work things out with Sanada, before they jumped into this.
Yukimura nodded. "Well. I'm glad that's settled, then. And I suppose I should go, and let you get back to what you were doing." He pushed himself away from the desk and stepped towards the door. "Have a good night, Atobe."
"You too, Yukimura," Atobe said, watching him leave. He sure hadn't expected his day would end like this.
