Mafalda loved each of her children for their own special qualities. Connor for his charm and wit, despite his drinking and his women. Shannon for the stubbornness she inherited from her mother and Felipe for his soft heart. While he did his best to please everyone around him, he always seemed to pick the one person in the room that didn't quite belong and make them feel part of the group, even if it was against his mother's wishes.
Today was not exception.
Felipe had to spent a late evening in Hogsmeade and decided to stay at the family home for the night. Mafalda was delighted. Even though work had kept her busy, she noticed she had been a bit lonely and Felipe's presence at home appeared to ease the ache in her heart. She woke early and made his favorite for breakfast; pancakes with blueberries with a side of bacon.
Pouring coffee for herself and her son, she heard him move around upstairs. Felipe emerged a few minutes later, dressed for work and smiling, he watched his mother read the paper.
"Smells great Mum. You were always a great cook." he lied. They both knew she was rubbish, but the sentiment was nice.
"Did you sleep well?" she asked, lowering her glasses to look at him. He nodded and dug into his breakfast, eating as if he would be late if it took him more than ten minutes to eat. "Don't rush Felipe. You'll make yourself sick."
"Sorry, Mum. I promised Leanne I'd meet her before work today." Oh. Leanne... Mafalda had to take a minute to remember where she heard that name. It was familiar. "You two need to discuss something work related?"
Felipe stopped eating. "No." The smile on his face vanished and turned very serious. "You do remembering me telling you that I've been seeing Leanne?"
No. I don't remember. she thought. Instead she said, "I didn't think it was anything serious. You hadn't mentioned her other than in passing the last few times we've spoken."
"We're getting married." Mafalda almost dropped the cup of coffee in her hand.
"Excuse me?"
"I asked Leanne to marry me and she said yes." he said. Rushing on, he tried to explain. "I've been meaning to tell you, but with everything that has been going on the Ministry and Kingsley's death, I didn't know how."
Sitting in silence, Mafalda was trying to get over the shock. Her son was getting married and not to a pure blood. It wasn't that she was a snob or thought less of those not of pure blood status, but their family had enough skeleton's in the closet. "Who else knows?"
Felipe hesitated. "Leanne's parents. Connor and Shannon. Katie, probably. She's Leanne's flatmate."
She was the last to know. Feeling hurt, but too stubborn to show it, she put on a smile and wished him congratulations. "You better hurry. I raised you never to be late." The conversation was over; for the moment.
