Before last night, she'd been slightly nervous but not particularly tense about the introduction to his mother, which Draco had told her would take place in his mother's family home. Then last night, the platinum ferret that was her boyfriend, decided he should 'probably tell her' that the location had been changed and not only would she be introduced to Narcissa but also to Lucius and the introduction would occur at Malfoy Manor. Hermione had been more than a little upset with him over springing it on her like that, even more so because apparently he'd known all week and hadn't had the bollocks to tell her right away. It wasn't that Hermione had found it particularly frightening encountering his parents ( ... )

Her reaction when he'd finally told her, though.... Draco forced himself to hide the grimace he wanted to make just recalling it. Perhaps he should have let her fret. "Nowhere with purple walls," he said, trying to keep his voice low and soothing. "And absolutely not that room. Love, I don't go in there if I can avoid it." He started to reach for her other hand as well, then realized with her nervousness, it was best to allow her to keep her wand-hand free. Instead, he cradled the ( ... )

"Library. There's a library isn't there? Maybe a walk outside first though. Perhaps the peacocks will try to carry you off and I can have a laugh over it. You look as if you could use a smoke too." Hermione knew she was mental when she enabled his smoking.

"Library. Yes. Definitely. We can take a walk if you like, though I do intend to hex any peacocks that get within thirty feet of me, thank you very much." He didn't press too hard on the snippishness of that from her. She was anxious and upset, and she deserved to be a little bitchy at her uncommunicative boyfriend. She was very anxious if she was encouraging him to have a cigarette. Draco spoke to the air, demanding their wraps, and a house-elf appeared instantly. It handed him their garments and disappeared just as quickly, and Draco tossed his cloak on a decorative side ( ... )

"I would love to see the greenhouse." Anywhere that would get her out of here while she regrouped would have been good but she would love to see the orchids Malfoy told her that his mother grew. Hermione accepted his help with her cloak and cast a spell on her shoes to keep them clean before they went out. "Does your mother tend the greenhouse herself or does your gardener do that too? I assume there is a gardener, isn't there?" Possibly more than one given the size of the place.

He took her hand again and led her out of the house. As soon as they were outdoors, he let go, drew his wand and cast his usual repelling charms, and lit a cigarette. Almost groaning with a relieved exhale, he made a gesture at the gardens and towards the greenhouse. "House-elves," he said with a shrug. "Mum's out there a lot, though. She loves getting to do it herself."

He sighed, scuffing his boots as he walked. "It's just...." Preferable to him telling people it's all right to kill me. "I'm just afraid that he won't be able to stop at polite. I can't. Seems like every time I talk to him, I push and push him. Even when I'm actually trying to stay civil, I can't. I want him to tolerate you, I want him to accept you. But there is always this little voice in the back of my head that says he's just waiting for me to drop my guard long enough so he can hurt you, and that once he's done with you, he'll take care of me. Lineage is ( ... )

Draco was scuffing his boots, which he usually only did when he was uncomfortable. "I noticed," she said in response to Draco saying he had trouble remaining civil. "It's very counterproductive, but you know that already. You do realize I'm not all that easy to take out, don't you?" Away from the house, she was feeling better. Hermione looked over the garden as they walked. "Draco, it's very clear to me that both of your parents love you. Your father doesn't want to get rid of you. He's trying hard to get you back." Hermione understood there was more going on that Draco had told her but she didn't need to details to recognize the affection she'd seen after the Battle of Hogwarts still existed between all three of them.

He took a long, deep inhale, burning a full inch off the cigarette at once and holding the smoke in his lungs until he absolutely had to let it go. "On the plus side, he did make it through today. He is trying, I can see that." Draco flicked the cigarette into the air and snapped his wand at it, Banishing it before it could fall. "I'm the one who's not trying. Just wish I knew why."

"I'd be interested in learning why too," she said softly. "I certainly hope it's not because beneath it all you're not sure about us." It bothered her that Draco apparently wasn't interested in trying to make things smoother.

"I know I may never fit in but I want so much for our children to know they belong and that they have family. A few short months with me isn't going to erase what you went through but you need to try letting the past go." Hermione knew that wouldn't be easy for him but perhaps if he understood what he was doing, he'd be capable of controlling himself better around his father.

"I can't forget what I had to do to save my family. The things I had to do for his sake. Murder? Torture? everything I had to do to try and save him." Draco shut his eyes against the side of her neck, his voice going unexpectedly raw. "And he wasn't even there."
