heres something cool about being in college.

i asked my dad if i could go to the Okkervil River show on sunday night and then drive back up to huntsville right after the show. he said no, i need to go straight back so i have enough rest so i can get up for classes. sucks for him that he has no way of knowing what i do once i leave the house. im glad im a rebel cuz it was the fuckin most fanfuckintastic fuckin show ive ever fuckin been to. okkervil river wasnt so good, but god damnit the openers kicked my ass. for years ive been telling people i want to see a certain kind of show, something just a ittle bit different, maybe some other instruments besides guitar bass drums, maybe something a little different from those fuckin annoying patterns and chord changes that every bad (but thinks theyre good) band uses. sunday night i got it.

heres the review.

BUXTON- a local houston band, a trio, folk in a very cool way. the singer was a little connor oburst-ey, but anyone whos heard bright eyes is automatically gonna say that. his voice was definitely unique enough to drop the bright eyes title. the songwriting/chord changes were superb, very classic folk but with some modernness in it to change it up. the bassist had some wierd wrythms, and i didnt get a very good vibe from him. the lead voicals/guitar and guitar/mandolin/keyboard-and-shaker-and-tamborine-at-the-same-time player were my favorite. mr. multi-instrumentalist was very talented. he used a buttload of effects on the mandolin that just made my day. in one song the drummer from O Pioneers! played along and id say that song was the highlight of my night, sounded exactly how i want to sound.

MAN MAN- ok guys, i cannot stress enough how much this band rocks. they are from philidelphia, a quintet. consists of: vocals/organ, drums, vocals/synth/big floor tom/metal pot, vocals/bass/percussion, and vocals/guitar/trumpet/f# horn/marimba. it was like 18th century parlor music and pirate music and classical music and Mr. Bungle and Paliament Funkadellic all mixed together. im not going to even try to describe it further cuz it would take too long, and i just dont think i could put it into words. bottom line: see them live. so much energy, makes you want to dance, such an original sound and choice of rythms. i heard some recordings online and i dont think theyre quite as good as the real thing. its just got so much power live, so raunchy and dirty. and on the recordings you just dont get to see it all put together, all the instruments making this crazy quiltwork of cum-inducing coolness.

Okkervil River- eh. they were allright, i think beause i had been listening to them before i came to the show i was expecting something different. They sounded good, but they didnt play the few songs that i think really rock. now i know its thier choice to play whatever they want, we dont want no stairway to heaven effect going on, but i just wasnt feeling it. i also got a lot of negativity from a few of the members. will sheff looked a little too rock-starry- got a little bitchy when things didnt go his way. it was prolly just how things were that night though. cant make a personality judgement on one day.

once again i used up all my energy on the opening bands. same thing happened at against me. oh well. headliners get all the love anyways. ill be the guy that gives it to the others.
