Star Wars: The Old Republic

I've never been a Star Wars fan, but when iceraptoress posted her reviews of the game, it looked like enough fun to give it a try. Our regular DoP crew is all joining in, which makes it likely that I'll enjoy it enough to keep playing. I have a Jedi Knight, which is a character created in consultation with Acorn, and I'm not sure just yet how much I'll play that character when I'm alone versus when Acorn's playing with me. We'll see.

I think the second character I've created is the one I'll be playing for team night.

In game terms, Orae is a Smuggler, with the advanced class Scoundrel. (I'd be making an icon from this pic if not for the mission text.)

Personality-wise, Orae's a pretty tough customer. After all, she's made a career of straddling the line between legal and illegal trade, mostly staying out of trouble with the law. She's also a woman who's succeeded in a rather rough, very male-dominated world.

And she's thoroughly pissed off that her ship - hership! She owns it free and clear! It's her home and her livelihood! - has been stolen.

Pro tip: Don't try lines like this one.

Orae: "Color me skeptical."

She should really have an eyebrow raised, or something. The lack of facial expressions in the frequent cutscenes is bugging me more than the lack of dialogue in TSW ever did. Since Orae has what appear to be burn scars covering the left side of her face and going down onto her throat, I'm using that to explain the ongoing neutral-face: the scarring makes her expressions asymmetrical, and while she doesn't let it bother her too much these days, she was self-conscious about it when she younger, and developed the habit of keeping her expression neutral. (This also serves her well when playing poker, or negotiating with treacherous separatist agents.)

Of course, if the scars really didn't bother her at all, she probably wouldn't part her hair so that it covers that side of her face. (It actually makes it hard to see the scars at all in the game, at times, which is fitting.)

(The two previous pics are from separate scenes in separate locations. See what I mean about the facial expressions not changing?)

I met up with laridian in the game last night, to finish up Kriz's last few missions on Tython. She said of Orae, “I get the impression she's trying to present herself as a tough chick, but secretly she likes weepy chick flick films when nobody's watching.” That's pretty accurate, except that she wouldn't necessarily keep her weepy chick flick films all that secret; she'd watch them openly if she wanted to, and just dare anyone to laugh. If someone's going to think less of her for liking something "girly" like that, that's someone she's not going to bother with.

Orae's met a few interesting people as she fights her way through a warzone on her way to take back her ship. This boy is supposed to have been kidnapped years ago and inducted into a militia. I'm guessing he's meant to be in his early teens, but the proportions are all wrong; he looks like an adult who has been miniaturized. (Seriously, my son was taller than this when he was seven.)

"Paul? For some reason, I thought your name was Eric."

And finally, fun with game glitches: You know you're in a warzone when you take cover under a floating pile of separatist corpses!
