pine needles.

we scale tall trees with small trunks
to see better what we're hoping to see
beyond our usual horizons.

perching at the tip top
with curled toes,
arms akimbo,
skinny against the wind at this height,

from my vantage point i can see those mountains,
green and lush with vegetation,
not so bare as they have always wanted me to believe.

i am imagining all those people i love the most,
living off the land,
living off some mountain brook in some small village,
mountainside, with flurries of birds
dipping and diving in and out of their low lying clouds,
living in harmony.

not here.

this scaffolding sways
with varying degree.
And it seems at times,
like this one,
that I might just plummet
much unlike a needle from the pine.
