It’s late afternoon when Brian finds himself on another solo quest into parts of the school he doesn’t normally go to. The halls are quiet, with only a couple of stragglers here and there; although when he passes the auditorium he can hear that rehearsals for tonight are in full swing.
He doesn’t pause though, just ducks around the corner and keeps walking. If he hurries, he can probably still catch-
“Joey,” he says, poking his head into the newspaper room. “Hey, man. Is Howie around?”
“That is 100 percent the question most visitors in here ask me,” Joey says, looking up from where he’s packing his laptop bag. “Most visitors are Nick though. You just missed him, he went outside for some fresh air. God knows he doesn’t go home.”
“Thanks.” Brian sends him a thumbs up. “You mind if I steal him for a little bit?”
“Oh my god, please.” Joey shoots him a pleading look. “Steal him. Kidnap him and stick him in a room made entirely of pillows. I’m going to barricade the door to this room when I leave, which is in, like, two minutes.”
Brian grins. “Great plan. I’ll see you tonight?”
“Tonight,” Joey confirms.
It’s not like their school is massive, but ‘outside’ could mean a lot of places. Brian’s pretty sure he knows where to go though. He starts off in the direction of the main entrance, his gym bag smacking against his side as he goes.
