I got a call this morning. In general, if the phone rings before 8:00 am, I know that there is nothing good behind it. That was the case again today.
We lost another member of ABATE early this morning. The accident happened around 1 am as he was pulling out of a fast food restaurant, or driving past it. The details aren't exactly clear. A young man pulled out into him and ran him down. He "didn't see him". Huge Burgundy Harley Road King motorcycle with loud pipes, and he didn't see him. My friend didn't die immediately at the scene but was declared dead about an hour later. The young man? His car is damaged, he is fine and has a $50.00 ticket for failure to yield right of way, or something similar. $50.00... Jackie was in his mid sixties. He had a son whom he wasn't close to. He was the person solely responsible for his elderly mother. He was a giant pain in my ass more often than not, but a good, decent man.
For those keeping score at home... this is will be my 17th funeral in the last 16 months, with a total of 22 people I know well dying in that 16 months. It might not be safe to know me...
