We'll see if this ends up being tremendously optimistic, given an impending child, but I'd like to give it a shot.

BIG GOAL:
I've said it before, writing. I usually fail at writing goals. So this time, I'll be more specific. I've been working casually on a book on (video) game design for some time, in pieces. I'd like to actually finish it, bring those pieces together, and put together a final product. I may use my work blog to accomplish this, or not. But the goal is to have a coherent, readable work at the end. With maybe some small controversial elements that would make a good GDC talk for 2012.

SMALL GOAL:
Organizing my comics. This may not sound like much, but right now I've got 14 drawer boxes of sorted, cataloged comics and a few boxes of unsorted comics. What I'd like to do is not just file the unsorted stuff, but to actually focus on going through the sorted stuff and getting rid of all the stuff I really don't need in it. It would be nice to gain some office space in the process of doing this. My collection really needs to be cut down in size, and now's a good time to do it.

OTHER GOALS:
We'll see what the year brings, I may update this later. Depends on time spent on a child, or on work, or on a host of other things.

Can you bring your successful work techniques to bear on these home projects? Deadlines? Status updates?

For the comics, I recommend choosing a collection size in advance that you consider acceptable, and ruthlessly cutting to get down to there. When you have no set limit, you make exceptions for everything. If you demand of yourself that you cut the collection, say, in half, you create a stark contrast that makes judgments much easier.
