Been a while. I'm stealing
shadesong's format, a little, here. I have collected many things of delight for you recently and had no time to share them.
WRITING
Stories
From
A Fly in Amber,
redcrowkater's
Marshmallows. Shweta-recommended, Pope-tested,
hnmic-approved.
Issue Ten of Shimmer, featuring a short story by
shweta_narayan as well as others, is available as a free e-download (or pay $6 for the paper and ink copy). Short stories as well as poetry (and an interview with Cory Doctorow, who is not to my taste but is well-liked by people I like.) Take, eat.
Shweta also has a story,
Nira & I, up at
Strange Horizons, and another to come.
I just discovered the
Internet Review of Science Fiction zine. Tell me...why can't this be love?
Yoon Ha Lee, who I may OMG get to meet at Wiscon, has a short story,
Blue Ink, over at Clarkesworld which I b'lieve I found due to its being nominated for an award/s, but that was before I left for vacation and now I can't figure it out. Still. Yoon fiction. Read.
cucumberseed's
A Corpse from a Swan deserves your attention. Also, give some crit on the first draft of
The Two Psychopomps. (Per the author,
here, comment on a public post to be added so you can see the goodness.)
If you sponsor
alexandraerin's writing
before April 1 - even if you just do a $1 recurring sponsorship - you can get a
trainsofheaven-themed mix CD from me. Details in the link. (Also, Alexandra pointed out how much
this piece from the Onion reminded her of a certain kind of internet bigot, and now I can't unsee it.)
Guess what came over the weekend? That's right, chickens, the
Ravens in the Library anthology, benefitting heart-sister
s00j, is now in the world and still selling copies. Get them before they're gone: once Sooj's medical bills are paid, the Ravens disappear from the world (and you'll feel dumb paying $50 on eBay for what you could have had for $25 to benefit S.J.). Stories by Neil Gaiman and Charles de Lint as well as hometown heroes
seanan_mcguire,
satyrblade (who helped get this project off the ground, and we love him for it),
shadesong and
yuki_onna, and many more.
Speaking of that nice Mr. Gaiman, he Twittered a link to
Slow Tuesday Night last week, and I really enjoyed the story.
Poetry
Lone Star Stories's
latest issue features
When Her Eyes Open, a poem by
shadesong. (Hey! It's a more different poem that's
also a perfume!) (Want more Song?
Here is bunches.
More? Also, don't forget that our Song is also a short-story writer and novelist, not only a poet like the Pope.)
OH HAI
shweta_narayan is my hero. Want to know what POC (pixies of color)
do to painters? Want to listen to a raga in
poem form? Ever been
daunted, and want a sonnet to commemorate it? Need to know
nine things about oracles? Shweta brings it. Show love.
Want a free book? Go
write a princess haiku for
jimhines before 4/3/09.
You already know to show
verb_noire love, but in case you forgot...
Novels & Books
C'mon. You knew it was going to be
Palimpsest, and it is. But it's also The Orphans' Tales.
I spent my weekend reading the Tales. Immediately upon finishing
In the Night Garden, I gave it to the Doom Bringer. When weather called him home, I sat out a tornado warning reading
In the Cities of Coin & Spice. PROTIP: If you read about the City of Marrow, where the wind blows all the time, during a tornado-watch windstorm, and get to the beginning of a climactic chapter just as the first big-ass clap of thunder hits, you may scream and jump like a little kid. This is not a bad thing. Particularly not if you can then text
yuki_onna and make her laugh with said anecdote.
These are not books, but S.J.'s
companion albums to the Tales are also a must, because I have had Kashkash in my head for, oh, a week.
Also, have been looking with eager eyes at my brand-new copy of
Shibari You Can Use,
passionandsoul's how-to book (and such a sweet inscription he wrote in the front, too.) It is amazing. Into kinky things and rope play? You need this book, chickens.
Already read any and all of these? Go review them on Amazon and show love.
ART & CREATIONS
RockLove Jewelry is doing numbered-edition sterling silver
bee compass necklaces for Palimpsest fans. OMG WANT.
The wonderful
kythryne, who twisted me up a memory not so long ago, runs
Wyrding Studios, for all your twisted memory needs. (Kyth is thinking about Wiscon. Buy lots of things & make it easier for her to decide!) :D
The also-wonderful also
trainsofheaven awesome
qotcpcf is extending her
polymer clay items sale at her Etsy through the end of April.
I think it's mostly all been snatched up by eager hands, but check out
cadhla's
art sale. Don't you want to be a pretty little dead ghoul too?
karnythia did it to me, and when I suffer, you suffer: behold, the marvelous skirts at
eShakti.com. And, while we're at it,
this skirt (recommended by
pester) looks like it needs to belong to me before the summer heats up. (And to go with those shiny bright eShakti skirts?
onceupon has led me to the source of her
vibrant colored tights.)
MUSIC, PODCASTS & AUDIO
Our darling GBMojo girls,
gingerdoss and Bekah Kelso, who were so awesome as two of the three
Traveling Fates (some sample tracks at that link), have their
dual album release ongoing RIGHT NAO. Go buy their music, they are rock and socks and beloved of the Pope.
Speaking of rock and socks and beloved of Pope...
seanan_mcguire's album
Red Roses & Dead Things is rock, and
vixyish is
fox in socks, and you want their music, cause I say.
pretzelcoatl recommended the
Vedic mythology podcast put out by puja.org, which is on my list of stuff to check out this week.
Overwhelming Positivity 32: Tandoori Lady has had me cracking up my shit for weeks. "She wore pearls...and she loved...bamboo."
Have you listened to
Storm Large & the Balls yet? Why not?
I also found this
YouTube stash of various Bob Dylan tunes, which has come in quite handy for listening to at the office.
blackrockmusic wants to hear from you on your favorite Black musicians in rock.
DO-GOODERATION (IN THE DANCERY)
The Boston Area Rape Crisis Center has both
shadesong and
emilytheslayer walking in their annual benefit as part of
Team Venture. Why don't you
sponsor Emily or
sponsor Song and help out BARCC with their good works? If you do, I will make you a more different CD, either by mail or e-download...email in the profile for details.
con_or_bust proceeds marvelously...nearly $4k from the auction and $1k in straight donations! Thank you! There are still a few
items entirely without bids if you fancy getting a book, critique, etc. on the cheap.
accessiblehouse could use your assistance: help a family stay in the house they built to accommodate specific disabilities. The economy sucks. Homelessness sucks more. Let's do this.
Go talk to
shadesong about what you'd like to see (or have to offer) for
Explo Fundraising to send the awesome Daughter of Song to Awesome Camp.
Heart-sister Tzaddia Morningstar is being called upon to whip cancer's ass once again; I guess it didn't learn its lesson the first time. Help us help her at
morningstarhope.

That's all the linkspam we have, chickens. Gonna take
hsifyppah's example and split my nearly-a-gig of
trainsofheaven pics into manageable chunks, starting tomorrow.
Do you have recs for me? Comment them here. Did I forget your marvelous art/writing/poetry/podcastery? Tell me so. LOVE. LOVE LOVE LOVE.
