I'm not promising to do this every day.
So, I made it to Louisville in remarkably good time, despite scrupulously observing the speed limit for more than half the distance. In a few hours, I take my ghost tour. The hotel is pretty cool, but no clanking chains so far.
The first couple of miles into Virginia is a "fog area" and they really mean it! I could barely see cars that had their lights on 20 feet in front or behind me. It's hilly, winding, and exhilerating! Actually, it reminded me of my dreams about driving, except there was no moment where a vista opened up and I was about to plunge thousands of feet like a roller coaster. (Maybe these dreams are why I'm such a cautious driver?)
Central-Western Kentucky wins my nomination for the part of the US that looks most like Germany. There are no wind-turbines or high-speed trains, but the landscape is very similar (it helps that I hit a section of highway with no strip malls or truck stops). A filmmaker with imagination could easily "dress" it to look like rural Germany.
I put almost 500 miles on my odometer, proving that I (and the car) can do that, although I won't try to every day. The last few miles before lunch was rough, I shouldn't try to "power through" quite so far without a longer break (did a couple of rest stops, but it wasn't enough at that point). Need to remember that as I continue.
