So, most of you know that I'm leaving NC to return to the Pacific Northwest at the end of this week. The end result is Vancouver, but there'll be several stops along the way. Here's how my plans look at this point (likely to adapt to circumstances):
Day 1: Friday 7/31. Get up really EARLY and drive a good long way to Louisville, KY. In Louisville I have booked a "
Ghost-Walk" tour this evening and a room in one of the landmark "haunted" hotels.
Day 2: Saturday 8/1. Explore Louisville. Louisville was home to the Nineveh Grotto of the Church of Satan back in the early 70s, and also the hometown and primary location of director
William Girdler ("Asylum of Satan," "Sheba, Baby," and ""Day of the Animals"), an old favorite of mine. I don't know if there will be so much as a plaque to commemorate them, though. I'd like to check it out anyway. Sometime after lunch, I plan to drive on to St. Louis, MO, not stopping in the
township neighborhood of
East St. Louis at all.
Day 3: Sunday 8/2: Explore St. Louis. I'll probably confine myself mostly to the historical museum, the art museum, and the park both are contained in. Around lunch I'll drive on to Kansas City, MO.
Day 4: Monday, 8/3: After a relaxing weekend, I'll get back on the road for real (I'm not planning on exploring KC). Pretty sure I can make it to Sioux Falls, SD, if not farther, today.
Day 5: Tuesday, 8/4. More serious driving. Cross South Dakota. I'd like to make it to Rapid City, or thereabouts.
Day 6: Wednesday, 8/5. This morning I take a minor detour south to go check out
Mount Rushmore. I don't think I need to spend any serious time there, but I'd like to see the monument that will still be standing when alien visitors finally find the burnt-out husk of planet Earth. They'll probably think we all had four heads. From here I'll drive on through Wyoming up into Montana. Ideally, I'll make it as far as Billings, preferably farther West than that.
Day 7: Thursday, 8/6. Today I plan to spend at
Yellowstone National Park, in the vicinity of
Mammoth Hot Springs. Old Faithful is much too far, but there looks to be plenty to see and do in this area, and it will be good to have a day of hiking after so many days in the car. There's no chance of getting lodging within the Park this time of year without a reservation, so I'll head back into Montana in the evening and drive until I see a vacancy.
Day 8: Friday, 8/7. Lots more driving. I think I can make it all the way to Coeur d'Alene, ID.
Day 9: Saturday, 8/8. I may start the day with a quick diversion to the "peace park" in
Hayden Lake, ID. I should be able to drive through Washington down to Walla Walla today, to see my friends
daotoad and
devil_heart.
Day 10, Sunday 8/9: I'll probably spend today playing with Kallisti, the daughter of the above-mentioned friends. If I can pull myself away by the evening, I'll proceed to Portland.
Sometime in the next day or two, I'll head up to Seattle, maybe with a stop in Tacoma, then gather my stuff into a U-Haul or similar rental truck and head up to the border, spend the requisite time dealing with border-crossing and eventually get to my new Apt in BC!
