i am so incredibly excited for this new painting. i took a bunch of digital pictures of my model (katie as usual) and printed them out, then sketched from those rather than directly from life...because this pose would be just way too hard to stay in for as long as it would take for me to draw it. now the sketch is in place and i'm so happy with how it turned out. the canvas is 30x40, and if this turns out as well as i think (pray/hope) it will....i will put it in late april's juried exhibit. i finally broke down and ousted my stubbornness regarding sketching on the canvas before painting, and i think it's paid off. if all goes according to schedule i will begin painting late tonight or early tomorrow, whenever i have enough time to get down both a base coat for the background and the base coat for the focal points as well. i've read that a pitfall many beginning realist painters are trapped by is the overuse of hard edges, and that instead softer edges should be used except in selected places...so i want to get the base coat for everything down at one time so i can blend it a bit and soften up those edges. i'm thinking i'll do very warm shadows on this one, very sensual, no cold green on these shadows like the last painting. these will be full of red (haven't decided on vermillion vs. cadmium yet) and probably siennas and umbers. the skin will be very white! and no mud this time because i actually have already placed everything on the canvas with the sketch, all proportional! i won't have to repaint my head and have it look all muddied by the black that was first used, like the last painting. it'll be those bright and pale colors without any darks underneath to muddy it up.

i wish i could start right now, but i'm doomed to be interrupted, not by anything particularly bad though -- just a nice fat trip to an art supply store with 70% off discounts at the moment. while i'm there i'll pick up the other oil colors i haven't purchased yet. i don't even have any cadmiums at all, no cool blues, and only one very opaque green. i am just so enthralled by how this day is looking at the moment. there is nothing better than being caught up in the joy of painting, bob ross style. hehe.
