weird food combinations

Right now i'm eating curry rice, with a hot dog chopped up in it. :( I'm moving soon and I refuse to go grocery shopping until I eat all the food I have, so nothing goes to waste.

I was just wondering what strange food combinations you guys have eaten when you were low on money and only eating things that were already in your pantry!

The best thing I ever did by accident was leftover chicken (one leg fed three people) cut into rice, with carrots shredded into it, shredded coconut, spices and chopped dates. The dates my mom had bought and forgotten about, the coconut I bought for pie for my daughter's birthday months before.

Also, I shred carrots a lot and coat them lightly in Cuban Garlic Lime dressing from Trader Joe's. A little of this (the bottle has lasted 6 months and is only half-empty, you don't need a lot) over a dish adds a touch of class and makes the food feel less poor-skills and more fancy-restaurant.

Also, when I poured caramel sauce over sliced bananas for dessert, my daughter loved it, and we try to keep the ingredients in the house on purpose, now, when caramel sauce goes on sale.

I once needed to bring something to a potluck and only had a couple bucks on me, and ran to the dollar store and got two dozen eggs for a couple bucks and made deviled eggs with olive oil and bacon salt. They were good, and I made sure to eat well at the potluck, as payday was a couple of days away!

All kinds of condiments on toast or crackers; condiments are my main grocery splurge when I'm feeling flush, and I usually have bread in the house, or crackers. Daughter and I had tapenade on toast for dinner the other night, with yogurt as a side dish.

I gotta say, it's nice to have a Trader Joe's around--they have so many interesting things to use as a base or a sauce.
