weird food combinations

Nov 11, 2009 16:22

Right now i'm eating curry rice, with a hot dog chopped up in it. :( I'm moving soon and I refuse to go grocery shopping until I eat all the food I have, so nothing goes to waste.

I was just wondering what strange food combinations you guys have eaten when you were low on money and only eating things that were already in your pantry!

this isn't quite the same situation, but whenever I knew money was going to be extremely tight for a few weeks, I'd make this concoction of tuna (canned, but grilled in a pan with olive oil), black beans, brown rice, canned pineapple, and I'd take a multivitamin. It's like a superfood, and that and the vitamin covers all your basis. It really didn't taste bad either.

Maybe you're fulfilling your nutritional requirements-but what a bizarre food combination! Pineapple with tuna and beans-yuchh!

Don't be afraid of the pineapple. Sweet and savory can complement each other really well.

One of the specials at a restaurant I worked at was were the tilapia quesadillas (spinach tortilla, refried beans, cheese, fish, pineapple and salsa). Delicious.

The best thing I ever did by accident was leftover chicken (one leg fed three people) cut into rice, with carrots shredded into it, shredded coconut, spices and chopped dates. The dates my mom had bought and forgotten about, the coconut I bought for pie for my daughter's birthday months before ( ... )

I gotta say, it's nice to have a Trader Joe's around--they have so many interesting things to use as a base or a sauce.

that sounds pretty good actually!

When I make macaroni and cheese, after I add the cheese packet I add some spaghetti sauce and garlic powder to give it some flavor. Its delicious!

Totally random, completely unhealthy combo, but if you're into licking up that last little bit, potato chip crumbs microwaved with shredded cheese on top. Delicious!

Other stuff I like to do that are actually useful is to add frozen mixed veggies to my mac and cheese.

Not really strange but spaghetti noodles with Parmesan, sun dried tomatoes and spinach is especially good. Just mix the tomatoes and spinach after you've drained the noodles, the leftover heat cooks the spinach.

Also, fried rice! Just leftover rice in a pan with frozen mixed veggies or whatever you've got on hand, scrambled eggs or baby shrimp is a fav in my family, toss until the rice is browned, add salt, pepper and/or soy sauce to taste and you're done!

Also, I like Arby's horsey sauce on just about anything. :D

We had a bulk bag of pancake mix from Costco that saw us through quite a few meals for a while. It's surprisingly flexible.

Oddest was probably adding garlic salt, zucchini and cheese to the pancakes, though just for true weirdness the BF tossed chocolate chips on his too when we were given a bag o_O I think I remember it tasted edible with the chocolate and all. Maybe. Peanut butter/jelly pancakes, pizza pancakes, egg roll veggie pancakes and such also figured in sometimes, along with anything else that can be added to a cheap starch. Those bags last a long time, and we topped 'em with anything we had.

We just either mixed onion/scrap meat/cheese/veggie whatever in the batter and pan cooked it that way, spreading tomato sauce on top, or made crispy pancakes and put things on it that are pizza-ish on top. The texture can get iffy depending on cooking, but it hits the required nutrient levels :D
