I work at a bank and see overdrawn accounts all the time. I have a few regulars who consistently overdrew their accounts. Two haven't done so in over a month, here's why. And i apologize for the lack of paragraphs. 1) if you have trouble keeping track never ever pay at the pump. It can take weeks to come out of your account, whereas if you pay a ( Read more... )

LoL @ at the last sentence, but true! Some people need to see the cash visibly, physically dwindling.

I got so frustrated i grabbed his hand and wrote 'don't pay at the pump' on his hand in sharpie. A month and a half of no overdrafts.

i hope you had his permission to do that...otherwise, you could have easily been risking your job with that. don't ever write on another person!

i don't let other people touch me without asking permission - someone like that may have ended up with a bit of a problem. the OP is no exception. NO TOUCHY (especially with permanent marker, wtf?).

Thank you for saying this. I appreciate the OP's intent to help people avoid overdrawing their accounts, but done without permission, grabbing someone and writing on them is exceedingly unprofessional.

Unless you live in Canada, where the money is out of your account instantly if you pay at the pump.

Our bank [in the US], they put a hold on the funds. It might take a few days to go through, but if you look at it online, you see the amount, and when it'll "officially" go through.

Yeah, my husband's account is like that. Things are "pending". It's an adjustment for me, very different than what I'm used to.

I'll take the pending when it comes to gas, since everything else comes out immediately, minus checks, and paypal withdrawls. His previous bank was just completely random on when things came out. We got close to overdrawing because of it, even with almost anal retentive attention to the numbers.

I have always kept very good track of my money, but lately have been having a problem with my CREDIT UNION no less! treating my deposits and debits differently. My check this week was direct deposited at 11 am Thursday, but I was overdrafted that afternoon:(

Call them and bitch about that. I can't remember which branch in particular but I know one bank actually had a lawsuit against them for regularly processing checks specifically in the order which would overdraft the account, or overdraft the account the most if an overdraft was already going to happen so that a person would get multiple overdraft charges.
