That would depend on the car and if you'd get more from the insurance company.

If the choice is between selling it for a lump sum or selling it in bits and pieces, I'd go for the former. Selling it in bits and pieces is a pain in the tuchus, and you have to have a place to store these things so they don't rot or rust or decay away while you're waiting for the next person to come along who needs that particular starter, or that particular alternator. While it might ultimately be more profitable, it can take years and you'll have an ugly totalled car that, eventually, you'll have to figure out how to get rid of.

good thoughts. im in an apt, so storing it anywhere isnt an option, and i dont really have the time to sell it off in chunks but if it would be worth it i would. i think ill just sell it for the 250

I should have added--though selling it for a lump sum is pretty much the best way to go, you might try and see if you can get a better price. $250 seems a bit low, no matter *what* kind of car it is.

It depends on the type of car... but I'd sell it to someone as a parts car (and not keep it yourself). Is it a newer car, or older one?

Oh man, to be honest, I KNOW you can get more than that!

My FIL sold our totaled '93 nissan stanza for $800, after it was in the paper for a day. First person who came to see it, towed it away at the same time, and he got TONS of calls over it. It had a blown engine.

That person is trying to screw you over. Call tow yards, and scrap yards and ask for a quote.

I would think you could get more than that. I got 500 for a 95 Corolla in similar (possibly worse) shape without even trying. One thing to do might be to call a mechanic you trust or a body shop and see what salvage guys they recommend. Craigslist (as mentioned) or maybe even ebay might be viable options if it's okay for it to sit around for a while.

I would contact a mechanic who works on nissans and see if they want to buy it. I had a 97 Volvo that had a blown head gasket and the Volvo mechanic by me bought it for $1000.
