My mother applied for food stamps (in Texas) in October and has finally gotten a letter informing her she'll be recieving $10/month (yes, ten dollars) as her benefit, because her roughly $1050/mo Disability, which is her only source of income, is too much money for her and her 16 year old son, apparently.
Am I wrong in thinking this is ridiculous? I think this is more insulting than outright refusing benefits, who could possibly feed 2 people for a month on ten dollars? She applied because the house has pretty much empty of food for months, and her entire check is used up on bills and can't be adjusted very much (car, utilities, and some but not all of the medicine she absolutely must take to live). She was selling a few things to eat while they reviewed her case, but she's got almost nothing left to sell. I will pitch in for groceries this month because the situation is dire, but I'm not in a financial position to help regularly. She can't sell the car, we don't have good public transport, and she's already been paying on this car for 5 and a half years, with about six months left to go. There are no food pantries in this area. Does anyone have any suggestions for an appeal?
