An odd question

I'm looking for ways to use really obscure, strange things rather than trash them, mostly food products that I hate to waste. Think: the extra brine left in an empty pickle jar, tuna-fish juice (the kind you drain into the sink), peanut shells, orange skins, bananna peels...I'd love to make them edible, but all ideas would be great (unfortunately, ( Read more... )

waste prevention, food

you can extract the essential oils out of orange skins to use as flavoring or you can put them in vodka for a couple of days and put an interesting flavor in your drink.

banana skins, you can use the gooy inside of the skin to polish shoes

the brine in a pickle jar.... might be able to add cucumbers and make more pickles

tuna fish juice, i'm sure cats would love it as a treat

I'm new here but I had to chime in on this...not only is it full of the metals but it is a total misnomer that fish is good for cats. It is actually very bad, espcially for fixed indoor cats, and male cats in general. The calcium content is so high that it can kill them...and do so very quickly, by way of kidney stones. I always gave my cats the juice thinkin' it was a nice treat. When my oldest started "leakin'" and peein' all over the house it was bad enough but when he ended up with bladder infection after bladder infection and then a blockage it was very scary indeed. I also listened as my brothers cat died a very quick and painful death because they thought I was overreactin' when I told them to get him to the vet NOW! We now have to feed my cats a special and very expensive cat food because of this.

it's been awhile but originally I think it was some indoor formula I got at wally world...not the cheap stuff but "over the counter" all the same. Now we have to use a prescription I have to get from my vet...It's Purina UR formula. If I dare give them anything else they start leakin' all over the place again. Vet said that most cat foods don't help matters much as they are pretty much all loaded with too much fish to begin with then add what I was givin' them from the tuna and it just made matters worse.

yup yup and yup. Mine too. almost died. thought he would have to have an operation to get him some new girly bits made.
I stick to canned chicken juice now, and when I make a chicken, I cook up and give them the giblets.
I have been doing that for years though, so they anticipate it like they did when I opened up a can of tuna. and cry
I don't think they'll ever stop crying when I open the tuna though, and it's been years since they had tuna water

yep same here, chicken is much better for them but oh do they miss the tuna...they can hear the can's of tuna when I open them and they'll come beg so bad it makes me cry and laugh at the same time.

How do you extract the oils of the orange skin? I would love to try this.
